Serial experiments lain is definitely a timepiece about the internet (released in 1998, when the internet was relatively new to the public), but I think it definitely aged well. Upon reevaluation, I've come to the realization that date a live is actually kino. The opening sequence is a complete rip the first 3 pages from the akira manga (completely unrelated to the rest of what I have to say, but I feel the need to point this out). If you view it in a certain lens, through using death of the author, it can be perceived as making fun of otaku who use dating sims. An example of this being in the second episode where Shidou has his second encounter with the yet to be named Touka. Multiple times, Shidou is given generated lines
