People go to mars, there are natives there, people get attacked by natives, the UN immediately decide to find the native's home plannet and bomb it using robots piloted by childeren. Pretty epic premise if you're into 17th century colonialism, but that's not what this is about.
Upon first glance I thought this would be very similar to 5 centimetres a second, and the plot and themes are definitely similar but the latter takes a very different direction. Having watched this, it's pretty clear to me why the same director wanted to make 5 centimetres a second - the premise is executed far more effectively and
...
is explored in a way that feels far more meaningful and deliberate than what's going on here
The events on screen are somewhat incoherent, just watch 5cm/s instead.

Three plot threads, all loosely connected, none very developed.
The girl finding her voice and singing again was probably the most promising of the three threads, though definitely not entirely original. The beauty and the beast stuff was clunky and felt like it was bolted on just because they wanted to do a "unique" take on beauty and the Beast. The C plot with the two kids and there abusive father came out of nowhere, at no point are the kids ever given any more personality than "the kids who get abused by their dad" and it all occurs almost entirely after the development of the
...
main plot and cast has concluded.
On a side note, within the last 5 minutes there is such an intense amount of friend zoning it is actually insane. Never have I seen so many people get so absolutely dunked on in such dismissive ways. The "Thank you." with the period, oh my.
Pretty terrible film, a waste of seven thousand, two hundred seconds.

Lots of exposition with no character development, that brings nothing of value to the story or plot.
The only Galaxy Express media I had watched prior to this was the 1979 film. As a sequel this film falls flat on its face; it felt like little more than a watered down repeat of the original plot only devoid of the character development and storytelling the sequel has.
For 2 hours you have to sit through Tetsuro wandering around with intermittent breaks so that an already established character can show up and deliver some exposition before disappearing to an optimistic soundtrack that thinks you are far more emotionally
...
invested than you ever will be.
Even when the film tries to introduce new characters, it misses the mark. On the Galaxy Express 999 we are introduced to Metalmena; with the way she is set up, you expect some kind of character development. But don't get too excited, there is nothing remotely new about this character. After Metalmena straight up tells you that she wants to take Meatel's body in the least subtle way possible, she spends the first half of the film reminding us at every opportunity that she does indeed want Meatel's body. But once the squad arrives at big bad evil planet, she sees Tetsuro crying over his friends death, points out he looks pathetic, and Meatel says "who wil lcry when you die" and bammo, she is now completely reformed. The film then has the courtesy to answer Maetel's question about 2 minutes later when the gang find the big bad evil bit of the big bad evil planet and Metalmena sacrifices herself so Tetsuro can escape. Of course Tetsuro sheds tears with a big swell in the soundtrack, but it completely lacks impact. You have no emotional investment in this character, none of it is built up enough to feel like more than a hollow rehash of the sacrifice Claire made but without nearly as much meaning. Worse still, she doesn't even die. Less than 5 minutes later she is back and makes another sacrifice.
There are a bunch of other moments like this were some reveal or moment misses the mark entirely or is just told to you in voiceover with a jpeg of Tetsuro staring at something fills the screen, but I won't waste tine going through them all.
Pointless film with pointless moments, don't bother watching.

Very Fun.
The story doesn't really matter, and who cares if the characters get very little attention when every single one has their own jingle.
...
I can't get the machine head jingle out of my memory. Help.
Watch it! NOW!
I wanted to keep this review short, since I honestly don't feel capable of giving justice to the sheer bonkers massive action that this film is in a long review, but the website refuses to allow short reviews, so have this extra text.
No film, in my opinion, does fun as well as this film does.
And doing fun alone is no easy task.
And it isn't a task that is in great demand either. There really isn't much space for movies that just sit the viewer down and say "Shut up, and watch all of this".
But what little space there is for such a film honestly belongs to Redline.
Sure, i wasn't crying at any point. Sure, I don't really care much for the characters beyond "he is the main guy, and she is the main girl", but I don't need to.
Granted, this doesn't look to be the best endorsement for a film, true, but I will say this.
Redline is the only film I have watched, enjoyed, and felt truly compelled to write a review for.
I've made reviews and rants about films I hate, but never a film I have really enjoyed.
And I think that says something about the impression Rediline will leave.
IDK what though. lol
