Social commentary is explored in both shows, and both use the idea of lesbianism with sweet romances at their core. Simoun details their characters significantly more than YKA's short runtime allows, however.

If you liked Shoujo Kakumei Utena add

...then you might like Simoun add

Two animes that detail *tons* of themes (oft similar, such as gender, sexuality, love etc) with a slice-of-life backdrop that use action sequences when appropriate. The amount of depth to characters in these shows is very similar. Simoun is much more light-hearted than Utena despite forgoing comic relief episodes.

If you liked Haibane Renmei add

...then you might like Simoun add

Both detail a fairly large cast (of largely girls), with significant religious imagery and touching coming-of-age stories and rounded out conclusions that leave the right questions in your head afterwards.
