*Fair warning first* This review may contain some spoilers so please keep in mind. This is also going to be my first review so bear with me
A lot of anime in the Fantasy genre or Isekai anime in a fantasy setting(or basically almost every fucking isekai at this point) have been pretty oversaturated with the easy going atmosphere and overpowered main characters. That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime is a pretty falls into this category quite nicely, with the goblins being kind and tame creatures. But watching Goblin Slayer this season, it's
...
now impossible for me to even think about goblins that way at all.
Goblin Slayer is a Dark Fantasy anime about a man that forms a party of adventurers to hunt goblins. The title is pretty self-explanatory right? It's got everything you'd want in a Dark Fantasy. You got blood and gore, lots of action, and it's also got some rape...I mean cute waifus ecks dee.
There was a lot of controversy at the beginning of the show on how it depicted the pretty graphic rape scene in , which made a lot of Social Justice Warriors on twitter go into a frenzy. "If you like this show then you're just a stupid edgelord that enjoys harassing women and minorities". The main criticism I see about the show is that its needlessly edgy on how scenes of sexual assault is nothing but empty shock factor, and I think that's pretty fucking retarded. Let me go a little in depth just in case there are some triggered SJWs reading my awful review who dislike the show for the reasons I just said.
Episode 1 was a fantastic episode in my opinion, even though it felt like my dick kept retracting from inside my body most of the times, but that was the whole point. It set the tone incredibly early. It showed us that even though goblins may not look as dangerous, they're actually violent and terrifying creatures. They attack villages, killing farmers and destroying crops, while also kidnapping and raping women so that they can reproduce, and they can become even stronger, turning into hobgoblins, or even a Goblin Lord. It shows a good example on how people depict them as harmless creatures as we saw with the porcelain adventures in the beginning definitely not knowing what they were going to get themselves into. I also got chills sent down my spine when Goblin Slayer first appeared.
The characters aren't really anything that special in his show, except for Goblin Slayer, who is one of the most badass characters I've seen in an anime. At the same time hes only a silver ranked adventurer, which is only the 3rd highest rank, which means he's not overpowered. I want to actually go into depth about Goblin Slayer himself. The show doesn't really give him a decent backstory, but it gives him an incredibly strong purpose. As a child, he literally watched his sister get raped and murdered by goblins, which makes him develop the most extreme amount of hatred towards something I think I've ever seen. That's all he talks about is killing goblins. He's killed so many for so long that he's gained an incredible amount of knowledge about them, which not only makes him badass, but really entertaining to watch. The way he plans out clearing a goblins nest and all his creative and efficient ways of killing goblins are so fun to watch. Every situation he is put in, no matter how dire it may be, he is always calm and collected. He is the main driving force of this show.
All in all, once you get past that stuff, this show is a pretty entertaining watch and was actually a breath of fresh air I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone for obvious reasons. On the other hand if you enjoy your dark fantasy and also a huge fan of Berserk, then I highly recommend you give this a watch. It was definitely one of my favorites of Fall 2018 and I definitely cant wait for season 2.
