Shamo is not a manga you read for fun, although it does have some mindless fights but you are to observe that they weren't so mindless as the story progresses, everything, everyone comes back at some point of time to pay the main character a visit. Those are the moments that hurt the most. Shamo is a piece of art carefully crafted, contrary to popular belief after the 200th chapter the story actually becomes better, the first 200 chapters you are planting the seed for the tree for which you will be later cherishing the fruits of.
Now the best part of this story, for me
...
personally it is the protagonist. Ryou Narushima is no cliched hero of the story, on the contrary he is the villain and is portrayed as an evil entity that for most of the story and the other forces from the story are trying to stop him acting as the good side of the world. Ryou develops a lot through the story, mentally, physically and even philosophically. While it is never discussed in the story explicitly, Ryou is very alone and has always remained an outcast for the most of his life because of his cursed past.
The art, yes it is quite something. The art may strike to the reader as bland and boring in the prior arcs of the manga, but it gets good, really good as the story progresses. In the later chapters the art style is just top of the tier, probably of the best I have seen.
The other thing that I really like about this manga is that the author plays with metaphors a lot. It makes the characters of the story feel more real and maintains the flow of the story naturally.
All in all, I think this pretty good of a manga, I don't usually write reviews because all of the mangas that I think are good are rated really highly here, but with Shamo it isn't like that, so I would recommend this manga to anyone who wants to have a good read or wanna dive deep down in human psyche. I am gonna give it rating of 10, I think it really deserves it.
