I'll be bold with this one since there isn't much to really say about it, it'll be saying the same things over and over with every point. People seem to enjoy it and I can respect it, but from my point of view this was a very pathetic anime, attempting "new" things that seemed interesting but fell flat and killed my enjoyment.
I'm not even sure why I started watching, people said all the time it was cool and I thought I might try just before Progressive came out. I haven't even had the faith to finish it, at the second episode I was already yawning,
...
begging for it to end. I know some people defend it because it is "deep" or a "metaphor", but I am trying to look at it as an anime like any other, because if you take away any pseudo-depht there was here, you only have a pretentious show full of incoherence and annoying characters and gimmicks.
First off, the story as a whole is impossible to tell to someone, why? Well it´s simple, there is no story, it's all disjointed. You can't even call it episodic since it tries to connect itself but not at the same time. That makes you feel in the end like nothing advances and everything stays the same, because that's what really happens, nothing.
I'll gove to them, for an "old" anime, the art is great, and it makes the over-the-top scenes slightly more enjoyable. The fighting looked awesome thanks to it. But outside of the animation, the art itself was pretty bland, I did not like the artstyle or the character designs, asides from Canti and the other robots alike.
For the sound I gave a 5 out of 10, why? Well I am more of a jazz person, and I believe if you are not into rock or that kind of music, the soundtrack will come around very repetitive and annoying. It made me feel as if every scene had some sort of tension and gave a pretty terrible vibe. But again, if it's your taste I don't see why you would be not allowed to enjoy this soundtrack.
Now the worst part in my opinion, the characters. They were horrible from start to finish. Mamimi was a walking doll, not in the pretty way, I mean she had no emotions and was dull as a character could be, worthy of a filler in some shonen or the like. The Main character was Shinji with the art style swapped and no reasons to be as he was, absolutely no depht and he served only as a mecha generator. Haruko was easily the most annoying character I had seen in an anime in my history of watching anime, and I watched plenty of bad shows but this was too much, she is supposed to be that funny-but-weird-and-random character that doesn't work at all, and she just ends up being incoherent and annoying, pretty much as if you had a character that could only express via clapping or something about as frustrating as that, no one can understand what she feels or what she's attempting to do, she's cryptic and not in any good ways, she is just frustrating. The rest are just no-one's, I could barely remember their names but the rest really don't exist in my mind, they were filler.
The enjoyment was just pathetic, no fun to be had here unless you are drunk or something, or want to say how intelligent and deep you are by watching that "masterpiece". I could not finish this and I never really will, an anime that has me begging for its end at episode 2 even if it's only 6 episodes doesn't deserve the acclaim it's got.
I give it an overall 3/10 because of the potential enjoyment in music and animation, the rest was terrible. I have seen animes pull ridiculousness and over-the-top action way better in other ways, that is, but they did it at least, like JoJo, of course and Lupin III: Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna, that both can pull off over-the-top action and excel at everything this anime failed on, because they didn't try being "artsy".
