Two of the most famous Yuri manga series, and with quite a few things in common. Their storylines have very similar plot points and story beats, and in particular their last tomes are almost eerily similar structurally. Both are highschool romances with an emphasis on lesbian self-discovery, and the way they develop is warm, cute and very sensitive. YagaKimi's artwork is very detailed and its paneling and use of lighting is very good; while Girl Friends is more cartoonish and exagerated, not allowing characters actions and expressions for a moment of normalcy, but they both complement their tones really well. YagaKimi's story is more subdued, dramatic and puts a more realistic emphasis on the context of the girls' relationship, while Girl Friends is more comedic and light-hearted, and rarely puts its focus on anything but the main couple. YagaKimi has a bunch of side characters with their own little arcs, while Girl Friends' ones are very charming and memorable but don't get practically any development and just work as foils to the MCs. I feel like the quality level of both series is very similar. I lean a bit in favor of Girl Friends because I find YagaKimi's middle arc a tad redundant and overplayed, and its melodramatic moments are harder to sit through for me; but I'll say in its favor that it has a more beautiful and touching ending than GFs, which in turn has a more consistent level of engagement.
