Every single episode name starts with word "Kill". Akame ga Kill is series focused on killing, assassination and fighting evil with evil. As much as I want to say about this anime, I won't express my full feelings because I want to keep this review spoilerless.

So what's up with Akame ga Kill ?

Story: 5/10

Story is very simple and quiet messy. Young boy named Tatsumi comes to new town, then he gets in assassination group called Night Raid which focuses on putting down corruption in the capital. They are targeting prime minister - ugly bastard that is manipulating current very young emperor and that leads ... to pointless bloodshed, ubiquitous poverty and other bad things.

Whole story, at the beginning feels that it had great potential, but ended up only decent. Is it unique in some way ? Yes, and that is a very good thing. By the introducing Teigu ( Imperial Arms) story or rather I could say fights scenes and characters were more interesting. Basically there are a lot of Teigus even ones that are ultimate weapons of mass destruction. What makes it more fun that those Imperial Arms vary in a lot of ways. We come a cross super-armor types, then we see something like string/wire manipulator, after that we come through badass laser-cannon and so on. Every Teigu is unique on its own, and gives user his very own abilities, but user must be compatible with Imperials Arms of choice.

Why the story feels messy ?

It has no real conclusion, ending feels rushed and empty. Sure, from the start we know that Night Raid wants to put down evil guys in Capital, but what after that ? Is something more to it ? Sadly... no. Although there are some mini-plots like struggle between Akame and her Sister that makes story a bit more interesting.

And now the biggest problem with the story - Meaningless, stupid and illogical... deaths. First of all, the death ratio is way to high. Characters don't get enough development before their death and thus the tragedy isn't actually that emotional. At some point it becomes like not what will happen next rather WHO will die next in horribly brutal way... Its just becomes disgusting. Death scenes atmosphere alone are often ruined by some out of place comedy that occurs after the scene.

I'm not saying that death of the main or close to main character is bad thing, it is actually very good to make a show more serious, but in Akame ga Kill, where someone dies there and someone dies over here its just pointless. Death are meant to have some meaning behind it, some purpose, and nearly all of the deaths in this series do not advance the plot further nor make the show more mature/serious. I would enjoy this show way more if all this mess just didn't happened.

Art and Animation: 9/10

Outstanding Art. It shows in a great way which emotions characters are feeling, fight scenes are spectacular due to slim lineart and great camera angles. It is not unique by any means but it still shines. Backgrounds are fairy simple, but solid too. What makes it more amazing is dynamics of animation, vivid colors and visible contrast between colors, they are great and makes fight scenes live.

Gore. Overflowing gore, you will definitely like art in this one if you love seeing gushing blood, detached legs, arms and heads.

The quality does not worsen through the show, it remains great, solid and lively.

Sound: 10/10

SFX are top notch ! Clashing weapons, precise footsteps, fantastic sounds of Imperial Arms, its just amazing.

Openings and Endings - first opening and first ending are worse than second ones. Latter are way more fitting and conveys in great way the feelings of the show.

OST is godly. Iwasaki Taku is responsible for this outstanding tracks. Music varies from gentle singing, through harsh rock, to fantastic chorus. Everyone will find fitting piece for themselves. OST makes great atmosphere and fight scenes way more intense and it fits really well with violence in the show.

Characters: 7/10

Characters are simple in this one but well designed and ok-written. I won't talk about everyone but here are the most important ones:

Akame - Title characters that actually is not the main protagonist. Cold-hearted but with portion of kind emotion. She cares about her comrades very much. Her design is harsh and is really expressing her dark style.

Mine - Tsundere, my favourite one from this show. Her design, Teigu and charm were really interesting

Tatsumi - He is the real main protagonist, typical main boy character that attracts nearly all the girls. His design is plain and boring but his personality makes him worth the audience attention.

Leone- Big breasted Sis that sips alcohol when she only can. She has interesting design that focuses on animals/beasts.

These four are the main "good" characters of the show. Why did I put good in quotation ? Because some villains in this anime are also good, but at the same time as the main characters they are also evil... in the end all of them are killing or trying to kill each others. And here comes next problem with this series - villains.

Villains in Akame ga Kill are just... boring they are one-dimensional, there is nothing that could make them interesting. Most of them are just thinking really simple and in the mediocre-edgy way like "I must kill you, because I just must and hah killing is fun right ? kill kill kill! " The real main villain - Esdeath is big tiddy frost gf that actually have no moral way of thinking and lacks mercy too, she likes torturing and guess what else... yeah killing.

The most interesting villain was actually supporting one - Bols, member of Jaegers - group of main villains including Esdeath as captain, all of them are trying to get rid of Night Raid. What makes Bols most interesting ? He has mysterious design, alluring and unexplored mind of psycho, he has wife and daughter too and that alone makes him more amusing than any other villain. He has great Teigu too. Others are not worth mentioning or I just don't remember them because they were stupid or/and uninteresting. Also, relationship between Night Raid and The Jaegers is messy too.

Enjoyment: 7/10

Despite all the flaws and lackluster plot, in the end I enjoyed Akame ga Kill (mainly because there was Mine, Tatsumi, Akame and Bols) OST was enhancing in great way the overall feeling of the show. Most of the fights were very good but not on the masterpiece level. Ending did not left emptiness in my heart, rather confusion, because it was rushed, deaths near the ending were just outrageous and there was no conclusion.

Overall: 7/10

Just go ahead and try it yourself, I certainly can see why someone can hate this show and on the other hand someone can love this show. For me it was just nice experience excluding those awkward death scenes.

I would recommend it for someone who loves gore, fights, vivid art, dynamics of animation - shounen fans.

I would not recommend it for someone who looks for outstanding plot, as there are a lot of other anime in this genre which have way better plot.

This show is short, very short, so my review won't be too long.

Holy Knight in one sentence: Rushed and wasted potential.

STORY: 4/10

As for story - It is nothing amazing, its bad and rushed, but hey !, there is no way to properly cover a lot of story in 2 episodes 26 minutes each long. It is all about semi-vampire girl - Kishimoto that want to fuck young "handsome" student - Shinta because that was her "fate". Apparently this boy have some powers too. Shockingly, after I watched 2 episodes I was kinda sad, because I really think that the story could go in great ... way and deliver amazing experience for the viewer, sadly it just ended after 2 eps with the "MEH????" ending.

ART: 7/10

Art is the strongest part of the show (exposed boobies huhuhu), but nothing special, the lines were pleasing to the eye despite some visible shortcomings. It was just good.

SOUND: 6/10

Sound, despite my expectations was good and by sound I mean OP, some little OST and ED, but oh my... the sound effects... they were bad, very bad, for example, character's footsteps were too loud and felt unnatural, + we got a bunch of repetitive "stock" low quality overused sound effects. Opening is the best part of the musical aspect of this anime (it had nice lyrics too!)

CHARACTERS: 6/10

Characters were just meh, not memorable and really simple. I would rate characters 4/5 If not those 2 guards - 1 guarding Shinta and one guarding Lilith. Especially that cat with heterochromia was quiet interesting character, and I perhaps liked her the most from entire cast of characters despite the fact that she had nearly to 0 character development. Design of characters are simple but fitting to the atmosphere. What really bothered me too was the fact that some characters appeared twice or few more times and they were just there, LITERALLY nothing about them had been said, they were just shown to the viewer. Two main characters were meh - uninteresting at all Lilith that actually got some backstory and "your-usual-harem-boy" Shinta that was ok-ish but nothing outstanding was told about him. At the end of the end he just got a little bit more interesting, and then this anime just ended (lul).

ENJOYMENT: 7/10

Nonetheless, I was enjoying this show, I just wanted it to develop more interesting story and especially characters. There was scene with exposed boobs, so + as well (am I really ok to say this :I ? it was quiet disturbing scene tho)

OVERALL: 6/10

Despite all the flaws and omnipresent mediocrity I think it is worth a try, it is barely 60 minutes of show so you won't lose too much if you happen not liking it at all. Story, characters and art make this show at least merely enjoyable. You won't like it if you are too fussy tho. If you are fan of vampire-powers genre you should think about watching it and then reading the manga because I heard that there is not that bad continuation, but if you have other, better things to do you shouldn't focus on this too much. there are surely a lot more well-written and/or animated shows about vampires out there.

I want to address to all people that are reading this review that i haven't read or seen other "devilmans" so i will only focus on reviewing this work.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Devilman: Crybaby aired on January 2018. I have seen a lot of hype about this show but i did not have time to watch it, until now. This was released on Netflix and if i'm not mistaken Netflix is not that well praised in Anime community, but it wasn't a problem for me. I'm glad that Devilman's episodes were released instantly, because if it was airing for like a 2 months I would ... probably didn't enjoy it that much, and here is why:

STORY: 7/10

Devilman:Crybaby's first 2-3 episodes weren't that good at all. I would probably drop it if it was airing like 1 episode per week because those first episodes felt uninteresting for me. But the next episode started to gain my attention, it became more and more interesting. Story is sad, dramatic, yet epic and satisfying. Episodes were fitting nicely into a continuous storyline. It is simple, no doubt about it, but fans of action/supernatural anime will like it and even find something more than a "bland storyline". There is a moment in the story that is shocking and turns everything inside out, and that is well executed and narrated, not many shows can do that thing smoothly. Last episode bothers me because i feel like it was too confusing, I was not expecting such shocking ending at all. Overall it was a good story with good narrative, and it even brings tears to my eyes in particular 2 scenes. Story is the weakest aspect of the series tho.

ART: 9/10

Art in Devilman:Crybaby is unique, thanks to the Yuasa Masaaki - the director of much praised shows like Ping-Pong The Animation or The Tatami Galaxy that had similar unique styles too. Lines in art were clear and dynamic in most of the scenes. Fighting animations were fluid and gorgeous. There is perhaps a bunch of people that will not like the overflowing presence of nudity and gore - Art in Devilman is NSFW. Some anime fans could even find it too disgusting, but for me, in this anime, scenes filled with visible boobs, rotten bodies, butchered people/demons were not repulsing. This kind of art style was creating atmosphere more shocking and astounding.
Design of characters was beautiful, and was fitting the characters lifestyle and emotions. I really like Akira and Miku design, it was clear, and again, UNIQUE. Miku is HOT. Akira looks hot and dangerous. Miko looks angry. And so on. All of the designs are reflection of characters personality, (maybe with exception of Ryou).

SOUND: 10/10

Music - The creation that relies on taste much more than other things. Music was mesmerizing. It was fitting in EVERY scene that were displayed to the viewer. Music is the strongest aspect of Devilman:Crybaby as i rated it 10. Music was creating awesome atmosphere. I'm not a fan of the Opening theme, it was just ok, but Ending was very good. I will certainly listen to the Devilman:Crybaby OST more, specifically well-known Devilman No Uta was incredible song.
As for the voice actors - the did great job too. Especially Uchiyama Kouki as Akira Fudou. Voice acting was always on point, and went hand in hand with characters emotions, design and facial expressions.

CHARACTERS: 9/10

As for characters in the show - they were all well written, emotional and i cared so much about them - especially Miku, every aspect of her was amazing. The characters had flaws, I think Akira had the most flaws of all the characters, but he was great loving... yeah - crybaby, and that to me was why all the flaws of him were like a breeze, that didn't matter to much.

"He is always crying FOR someone"

The character development was great and all of the characters progressed throughout the series, growing and becoming more attracted to the viewer. Characters had some backstory too, especially Ryou, and it was shown in pleasant way. I was amazed by the "hip-hop" group. They were on point, and their music was urging me to reflections, specifically Kukun's freestyle that moved Miku. It had amazing words and meaning for her, as she bounds further with him. There really weren't any characters that i disliked or hated, all presented characters were great, supporting cast was good too. The only one group of characters was too illogical to me - The unimportant crowd of humans. They just did not felt real, they were like - "Here, attack this guy, he could be a demon !. Oh, look here, he is perhaps a human but kill him anyways" Ehh... This did not feel right, it felt like they all have been hypnotized with anger or some satanic influence and that made them feel very unreal.

Overall, I think that characters were astonishing, but i probably won't think a lot about them, because i haven't connected with them in every emotional level that matters for me. Besides that i will remember them for sure.

What i can say, huh ? I enjoyed Devilman:Crybaby, it was very good , but short experience. I'm always positive for shows that are so emotional like this one. I certainly think that other anime fans will like this one, its seemingly not the best show in this theme about demons and devils, but its worth watching for sure ! I really think that even non-anime viewers could enjoy this, if they don't mind NSFW aspects. I would perhaps in the future read or watch other devilmans for sure. This series was unique in my opinion, and memorable after all.
