I watched Film Red last week and wow… what a massive disappointment. I’m almost as disappointed as I was when I went from the one-piece manga to the anime, discovering what an abysmal adaptation it truly was.
This movie advertises itself as a one-piece movie starring shanks finally, after all these years we can finally see shanks on the big screen. Has a massive one-piece fan myself I was hyped up to see what this film had to offer, only to be kidnapped into a 2-hour coma.
Utas devil fruit abilities make it so that the moment she starts singing everyone in her vicinity falls
...
asleep, but she also made me fall asleep because of this dog crap movie.
the plot of this movie is so convoluted and frustrating. Why does Uta want to save the citizens of the world? Why does she seem to hate pirates at the beginning of the movie? Because of a misunderstanding between her and shanks it seems, the movie tells us this in the middle of the third act, actually NEVERMIND she knew the ENTIRE time that shanks weren’t responsible for the disaster on the Island yet she continues on her goal which is now entirely convoluted and unnecessary.
at the beginning of the movie, we see how around the world the great pirate age has had a negative impact on regular civilians. Having Uta’s backstory involve Shanks and his possible misdeeds leads to a compelling narrative, but no no no we can’t do that. instead of that unique pushing-off point, we get a reveal that she knew all along and the reason she wanted to do it was just because people are suffering. it doesn’t come from a personal place. Filmento once said something wise: if your plot is built solely a character *wanting* something, odds are the plot isn’t emotionally powerful enough. there is no urgency there is no stakes they lose nothing if they don’t succeed. What’s annoying is the movie gives us a compelling reason why Uta’s doing the things she doing, but instead it replaced it with a boring stereotypical villain I've seen a billion times before.
the straw hat crew is sidelined for this movie and it mostly focuses on Uta and Luffy. the problem Is Luffy is a passive character being pushed around by other characters like Law and Uta herself. This makes Luffy the blandest and most boring character for a feature-length movie. even when his HAT is stolen he doesn’t take any major action to take it back as he would usually do in character.
The musical elements don’t add anything to this movie. Her songs are forced into the movie with no thought on how they play into the narrative, you can completely cut them from the movie and we wouldn't lose anything.
The animation for the finale at times was very hard to look at. Almost epileptic and stuttery in its quality. I would expect the cream of the crop 2022 smooth easy-to-follow fight scenes, but instead, I was sorely disappointed.
Uta’s powers are so overpowered and undefined, like Wanda from dr strange and the multiverse of madness.
the narrative is stereotypical for a one-piece movie. the lousy guy hates pirates, and it's shallow in its presentation and message. many missed opportunities.
I would not recommend anyone to see this in theaters. I felt embarrassed watching this, hoping no one would catch me watching such dog crap publicly. The cherry on top of the experience was not being able to get a refill on my large popcorn, turns out AMC employees throw out the extra popcorn before the final screening finishes. I’m feeling a low 4 on this one.
