Both feature a mostly animal cast where the animals are living like people. With purposefully no explanation given to why this is different than our reality. Sasako is a bit like Akino in terms of her role as a human who primarily works for animals and puts up with some eclectic customers herself. Just in a different type of service industry job. The film has a few different stories play out with different characters that almost feel like they could be Shirokuma Cafe episodes in terms of their content. The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store is a short, but sweet movie that I think fans of Polar Bear's Cafe would find some enjoyment in.

Both have easily likable, energetic heroines that you want to root for with a fun supporting cast. With more of a focus on comedy than romance these are both good shoujo-esque anime for people who don't really like shoujo anime that much.
