Gankutsuou is the sci-fi adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo". It's a pretty damn good anime. So this was recommended to me as a secret santa thing, but sadly I did not have the time to watch it until recently. As for the adaptation part, I have not read the book so I can't say if it's very faithful or not, though it did make me way more interested in the book than I was, but I digress.

So, a sci-fi adaptation, might sound like a risky move, but it works really well, the universe is interesting and the sci-fi technology allows for ... some cool scenes and so on and so forth.

The Story is great, it's tragic at times, there are all kinds of emotions getting thrown at you, there is joy, there is sadness, there is anger and so on. It's well crafted and exciting to watch it unfold. It's mainly a story about revenge, friendship and a bit of betrayal.

Now the art is probably what deserves the most praise, the style is absolutely fantastic, it's very unique and the anime is all the better for it, and placing the story in a sci-fi setting allows for some really cool scenes. So if you're a sucker for good artwork this anime should be on the top of your list. It has a style that really stands out and every scene is an absolutely beautiful masterpiece in that regard.

Sound? I don't have any complains, the soundwork is good and all the parts are well acted.

The characters are fantastic, they feel very real, they are all very well defined, with strengths and weaknesses, and as a viewer you are able to empathise with about everyone. They all have likable traits and dislikable and you're often not sure if you love them, hate them or just simply pity them.

All in all it's an anime that I really enjoyed and I think most people will find something to like about it, wether you like a good story, good art etc. Well, if you're only into the violent gory stuff you might want to give it a pass, there is a bit of violence, but it's not a main part of the anime.
But I do believe that most people will find some enjoyment here, and I do think people owe it to themselves to check it out.

This anime about swimming with homoerotic undertones is aight, I guess.

I guess I should write a bit more about it, the animation is great, if that's your thing you really oughta check it out. As far as the rest goes it's slightly above average. Some nice friendship moments and stuff, but as I said in the beginning, it's aight.

Appearantly that's not long enough for MAL so I'll continue, the anime is about swimming, there are swimmers in the anime and they do a lot of swimming. And then they enter some tournaments where they also swim.

What more do you want from me MAL?

Astrid Lindgrens story really comes to life in this anime, which is a great adaptation and manages to make fans of the book feel right at home while still managing to excite them.

If you enjoyed the book you owe it to yourself to watch this anime, it does the source material justice, and it will make you feel like a little kid again. There is so much ejoyment to be had in this anime wether you've read the book or not.

The characters are great, there are moments of joy, moments of sadness, and everything in between.

If you want to watch a good and heartwarming anime ... Sanzoku no Musume Ronja is a great option. You won't regret it.
