TL;DR
If you’re looking for a sequel to Macross with a similar story this is not it, but if you’re wanting to watch everything Macross, then this is enjoyable enough.
If you are choosing between this and the OVA: the OVA has better pacing, but the movie isn’t much different, while being less of a time sink.
Story [6]
This is a movie recap of Macross Plus: while its story is the same, it’s told in a more streamlined way, but by telling the same story in almost half the time has made the pacing almost too fast.
Even though Macross Plus is a sequel to the original Macross, its
...
story is completely different: Macross Plus is much more similar to Top Gun than to the original Macross. The only major theme shared between the two shows is the presence of a love triangle, and the presence of a pop idol, but its role in the story is very different compared to other anime set in the Macross universe. While these changes aren’t necessarily bad, Macross Plus’s story cannot develop them enough to make them great; another problem of Macross Plus is the lack of consequences for major events, thus making the story less enjoyable.
Art [8]
The art style and the design are great: the Valkyries are well designed; the great design doesn’t stop at the Valkyries, also great is the concert from the second episode.
Like the art and the design, the animation is also very good: despite the age of this anime its animation still holds up and even the early 3D animation doesn’t look bad.
Also of note is the fact that in this version of Macross Plus some scenes that weren’t in the OVA were added, while others from the OVA were moved around.
Sound [8]
The sound track is good, but it isn’t as memorable as that of the original Macross, luckily this isn’t an issue since in Macross Plus music in general doesn’t feel as important as in other anime set in the same universe.
Characters [6]
While the side characters of Macross Plus are well made and used at the right times, the same cannot be said for the main characters: with the exception of the female lead, the male leads aren’t only selfish and generally unlikeable, but when they finally change, the motives of their conflict appear so weak that their becoming better people it’s not enough to make the show better.
Enjoyment [7]
Even though I didn’t really like Macross Plus for its story or for its characters, I did like it for the attention it gave to flying scenes and to the Valkyries: the Top Gun feel is what made me keep watching the OVA, and for the same reason I came back to the movie version of Macross Plus,

TL;DR
If you haven’t seen Cowboy Bebop and aren’t sure about it this is a great introduction: you don’t need to have seen the series to enjoy it and it doesn’t give any major story spoilers for it. On the other hand if you have already seen the original series this a great additional episode.
Story [8]
The story of the Cowboy Bebop movie follows the same plot points that the episodes of the original series follow, and it uses its longer runtime to be more developed and slower paced than a normal episode. The story’s similarity to the original series is also its main problem: it’s well
...
made, but its plot isn’t very original, making it feel like a generic sci-fi action movie.
Art [10]
Cowboy Bebop’s movie keeps the great art and animation from the original series and makes them even better: the animation of the fight sequences in particular flows very well.
Sound [10]
Cowboy bebop is known for its music and this movie’s soundtrack keeps the high standards of the original series: not only is the music great at setting the mood for the movie’s scenes, but it’s also great as a standalone piece of work.
Character [8]
As I wrote before Cowboy Bebop’s movie is basically a longer episode of the original series and this is also true for the characters: they are the same well-made characters as their TV versions and they are aided by a good set of side characters.
Enjoyment [9]
At the time of writing this review I’ve seen this movie three times and every time I enjoyed it: what makes me come back to it isn’t its story, but it’s its great art and animation , which become even better when they are set to the soundtrack.

TL;DR
An enjoyable addition to the Universal Century, it can be watched without knowing anything about Gundam and the Universal Century, but its enjoyment grows if you know more about the events of the UC.
Story [7]
The premise of Gundam Unicorn’s story is interesting and its ending is well made, but this OVA is brought down by the fact that its story reuses many of the plot points that are in other Gundam anime, without changing them too much, if at all. Another problem for the OVA’s story is the fact that its very character driven, but the characters in it are far from perfect.
Problems aside, a
...
positive of Gundam Unicorn is that its story can be enjoyed without knowing anything of other Gundam series set in the Universal Century, but the importance given to some people and events will be clearer if this isn’t watched as a standalone OVA.
Art [9]
The animation in the whole OVA is very good, the action scenes in particular are great. Also great is the art and the design of the mecha: the RX-0 in particular is very eye catching.
Sound [7]
The soundtrack and sound design are good, but don’t standout.
Characters [7]
The characters of Gundam Unicorn aren’t great: most of them aren’t likeable from the start, but they get better during the course of the OVA; at the same time other characters never get better, or are there just to be nuisances more than antagonists, so they can end up being boring.
Enjoyment [8]
At the time of writing this review I’ve seen Gundam Unicorn three times and each time I found it flawed but enjoyable: the story isn’t perfect, but I like its core message, and I like the importance that the later episodes give to Newtypes and their powers; another point in favour of this OVA is the design of the RX-0, not only does it look amazing, but its combat scenes are very well animated.

TL;DR
The Ocean Waves isn’t perfect, but it’s underrated. If you like nostalgia you’ll probably like it, and even if you don’t, it’s short, so it isn’t a time sink.
Story [6]
In theory this is a good story about romance and the coming of age of three high school students, it’s slow paced, but that isn’t a problem; what is a problem are the characters: in a movie with these themes they should carry the story, and while they are good enough to make the movie somewhat enjoyable, they aren’t good enough to make it truly good.
Art [8]
The animation is fluid and generally very good. Also very
...
good is the art style: its nineties look and feel is part of the appeal.
Sound [8]
The soundtrack is very good at portraying the character’s feelings and at setting the mood for what is happening on screen.
Characters [6]
The characters are the main downfall of this movie: if they are taken one by one they aren’t easy to relate to, but they aren’t badly written; what really is a problem is the lack of chemistry between the male and female lead which makes it hard to believe in the romance that the movie builds up to.
Enjoyment [9]
Even though this film is far from perfect, I very much enjoy it: at the time of writing this review I’ve seen it three times already.
What really sells this movie to me is the feeling of nostalgia that it gives off: maybe it’s because it’s one of the first anime I’ve ever seen, but it’s greatly helped by the art style and by the soundtrack.

TL;DR
A great anime about people more than plot. If you don’t find the characters relatable from the start it may be harder to enjoy, but I would still suggest giving it a try.
Story [7]
Since this anime is a romantic comedy there isn’t a real plot: everything is centred around the main characters, and the overarching plot of the series isn’t concluded since there are two more seasons after this one. Nevertheless each episodes’ stories are quite good and keep developing the characters.
Art [8]
...
The art and the animation were good at the time of release and are still good now.
Sound [7]
The soundtrack and sound design are good, but don’t standout.
Characters [10]
The characters are the base of this anime and their flaws are what drives the plot forward.
Even though the characters aren’t perfect people, they never become hard to watch: if you find them relatable you’ll be invested in their progress, however slow it may be; otherwise you won’t hate them since their slow change never gets too frustrating.
Enjoyment [9]
While watching “My Teen Romantic Comedy” I found the characters very relatable in their flaws, but also in their progress to be better, so I can only say that I’ll watch the second and the third seasons hoping for the same quality writing if not better.

TL;DR
If you have already watched “Macross” and “Macross: Do You Remember Love”, and you enjoyed their music, then watching this OVA won’t leave you disappointed, but I would suggest watching it only after having watched the movie, since much of its art and many scenes are taken from there.
Story [8]
“Macross Flash Back 2012” is a music video compilation made from the scenes of the original series and the movie, so it doesn’t introduce new plot points, but the few minutes of new scenes for the ending are well made and are a great send off to the original Macross.
Art [8]
This OVA’s animation is good: most
...
of it is reused from the movie and the original series, and the few new sequences are kept at the same quality.
Since many scenes come from the movie the art is more detailed than that of the series and it uses the same new designs that are used in the movie.
Sound [10]
The music in “Macross” and in “Macross: Do You Remember Love” was already great, here it’s made even better by the fact that it’s given the centre stage: some songs are extended and there is no dialogue or other sounds over the music.
Characters [9]
Since this is a music video compilation more than anything else, the characters here aren’t given much time, but they are the same great characters that are in “Macross” and in “Do You Remember Love”, so there are no complaints.
Enjoyment [10]
While watching “Macross” and “Macross: Do You Remember Love” much of my enjoyment came from the music so watching this OVA was a no-brainer and I wasn’t disappointed: “Macross Flash Back 2012” gives closure to a great anime series, and it does it very well.

TL;DR
A great complementary piece to Macross: in my opinion the story isn’t as good, but the new animation makes up for it. If you have already seen the series this is a must watch, otherwise this isn’t a recap movie, so I would suggest watching the original Macross before watching this.
Story [8]
Do You Remember Love isn’t a recap of the Macross Series: the themes are the same and by the end the situation in the movie is similar to that of the original anime, what changes is the way the ending is reached.
This retelling is well made, but it has some pacing issues: since the
...
first half of the movie needs to touch on many of the plot points of the series in very little time everything moves very fast leaving no time for reflection. Luckily the second half of the movie is better paced and it gives the right weight to the right moments.
Art [9]
The animation was great for the time and it still holds up today, it’s even better if it’s compared to the animation of the original series.
The art is slightly different to the one in the series: the biggest change is in the look of the Zentradi, and coming from the series the difference can be somewhat jarring.
Sound [9]
Like in the original series the music of Do You Remember Love is great: the great songs of the original Macross are still here (with some additions) and now they’re given better accompanying visuals, making them even more enjoyable.
Characters [8]
The characters of Do You Remember Love suffer from the same problem as the story: since there’s less time to build their backstory they lose their nuances and with that they become less interesting. If you have already watched the original anime it’s not much of a problem, since you already know everything about them, but if this is your first time watching some aspects of the characters can feel rushed.
Enjoyment [9]
In this review I noted the story for being too fast paced and the characters for being not as great as their TV counterparts, but these things didn’t take away from me very much enjoying Do You Remember Love, and the great animation made it even more enjoyable to watch.

TL;DR
Macross was made after Mobile Suit Gundam, but it still manages to change up the genre, the characters and the story are both well written, and the music is great: for me it’s an easy recommendation even for people that don’t necessarily like the mecha genre.
Story [10]
Macross’s story is divided in two arcs: the main one, from episode 1 to 27, contains the bulk of the story, while the second, from episode 28 to 36, mainly concentrates on the love triangle between the characters.
The first story arc moves at a good pace and it mixes war and romance beautifully: thanks to the action it
...
never gets boring, but time is also given for slower moments.
The second arc is a bit slower and it concentrates on the love triangle between the main characters: it may get frustrating, but it closes everything down without leaving many loose ends.
Art [7]
While the art and design of this show are good even for today, the animation is not on the same level and it’s quite inconsistent: in some scenes people’s eyes are way off and so are their faces, while in other scenes the animation is beautifully made and fluid.
Sound [9]
Since this is Macross the music is as important as the plot and it shows: Minmay’s songs are catchy even today. The rest of the music and the sound design are also good and they don’t make the anime feel too old.
Character [9]
Since Macross is not only about a war in space, but it’s also about love, it’s important for the characters to be very well written and in this case they are: the decisions they make never seem to out of character and they are consistent through the whole series and their decisions make sense most of the time. Only in the second story arc, when the love triangle becomes more prominent, the main characters become a little annoying, but everything gets resolved and they go back to being well written.
Enjoyment [10]
Before watching this I had already watched Macross F and I liked it, but I never thought that the original Macross could be so much better. The story and the characters make watching Macross a real pleasure and the music adds that something that make Macross stand out from other mecha anime of the time.
In short, if any of the Gundam anime are on your “must watch” list, then you should definitely give Macross a try, and even if you don’t like Gundam, maybe you should try watching Macross: it’s different enough from other mecha anime that you might like it.

TL;DR
Macross Frontier is a well-made anime with the music as its highlight. It’s easy to watch even if you haven’t seen other series set in the Macross universe, so for me it’s an easy recommendation.
Story [7]
This was my first time watching an anime set in the Macross universe so everything was very new and interesting for me, luckily there are never too many references to older Macross series, and those that are there aren’t essential to the understanding the story of Frontier.
The story is nothing special but it’s great at mixing different genres: mecha, music, romantic, and sometimes even comedy.
Overall the show never gets boring
...
and leaves you wanting more after each episode.
Art [7]
The art and the animation are good: they aren't anything revolutionary, but they are consistent.
Sound [10]
As you would expect from an anime in which one of the main characters is a singer the music is great, especially when it’s paired to great scenes of mecha fighting in space.
Character [7]
Frontier’s characters are not great, but they are good enough: even though most of them don’t seem to change much, if at all, they are well written enough to never become too cliché or boring.
In particular Alto seems to be the most resistant to change, while the female main characters (Ranka and Sheryl) are the ones who change the most, thus keeping the anime interesting.
Enjoyment [8]
I liked this anime from the start, and even though I didn’t really like the last few episodes I would rewatch it just for the fight scenes set to the great music.
