Edit: So it just had to delete a chunk of this review, because I assumed the pacing would continue with 4 episodes per arc, but after they just ran through 80%+ of the second arc in a single episode, I have no idea what their plan with this series is.
On to the mostly still the same rest of the review:
After the first episode, I actually had pretty high hopes for this series. It was the first comedy RPG-fantasy series I had watched in a while that was actually funny, so after watching the first episode I picked up the Light Novel to read ahead. I
...
somewhat enjoyed the first three volumes of the novel but they weren't anything too spectacular.
While in the LN the first arc (every volume is an arc) was pretty funny, and it dropped off hard after that, the anime basically dropped the ball after episode 1. They cut out most of the good jokes and rearranged the already not too good story and characters to make it even worse. Because a lot of the jokes actually play a role in the story, a lot of things just stop making sense when you cut them. There are scenes where, unless you already know what's going on by having read the Manga or LN, you will have a hard time figuring out what exactly happened.
Overall the story is pretty much what is written in the title.
The art of the anime also really isn't too great and is only getting worse as it goes on. While it's art style is nice, simple and wholesome looking, making you think it would be easy to animate, they still have a lot of still and panning shots and most, and even on those they start going off-model making it often just look cheap and unfinished.
As for the Sound. There is nothing particularly remarkable about it. It isn't bad, and it also isn't particularly good.
Some of the Characters start getting annoying quickly. The main cast is the main character op boy Lloyd and a bunch of girls, with a random noble's son, called Alan, thrown in from time to time from the second arc onward who doesn't really add much.
Lloyd as a main character is as basic as it gets. He's always cheerful and nice to everyone while being a lot more OP than he realizes. He is pretty forgettable.
Then there is Marie, one of the few sane girls in this show. While the first arc is mostly about her, she still also doesn't have much of a character except for being the person Lloyd lives with, and for some parts of the story just being the audience surrogate character.
There's also Riho, the mercenary. Her whole premise does seem the most interesting, as she seems to only be around Lloyd to profit off of him at first, however, she also quickly becomes just another girl to add to the potential romance candidates.
Now we get to the annoying characters. Selen, a yandere and Alka, a loli grandma. Both are way too """in love""" with Lloyd. Selen basically is convinced she will be Lloyds future wife and will go to any lengths to show that. Alka, on the other hand, is the mayor of the village Lloyd came from and has basically been grooming him all his life and putting him into sexual situations for her own desires. Both of these characters get annoying and somewhat disturbing very quickly.
There also is a brother character introduced in this who isn't in the first three arcs of the other versions of this story, but with them suddenly decreasing the episodes per adapted volume ratio, it could be that this anime will go much further than arc 3, and that brother is someone from way later in the story, they decided to tease earlier on.
Overall it isn't horrible, but also not anything you have to watch. Especially with how many actually great shows are airing right now.
