Story - 7
The story can be viewed in one of two ways:
1- Yui's quest to join the Light Music Club and the club's attempts at playing shows, improving etc which is present in few episodes.
2- A general following of the light music club's endeavours and their cutesy antics, this story being the more present one.
If you're looking for a strong story driven and episodic anime then this most likely won't be for you, whereas if you want an anime that doesn't require a lot of thinking and allows you to zone out or just put on when you want to have a laugh K-On! should
...
be right down your ally
Art - 7
The show's art isn't exactly great meaning it can be hard for it to stand out in a crowd but it is still nice to look at. The characters in the anime all tend to be easily distinguished from each other although during certain scenes such as when they are asleep the characters can be difficult to tell apart (especially Yui, Ritsu and Ui)
Similarly the character's designs (cute girls, big eyes etc) are pretty similar to those of other characters in other moe; also taking from its ability to stand out in a crowd
Characters - 7
Although the characters are most likely based on the archetypes of most moe characters you shouldn't let that put you off
All of the characters are easily likeable in K-On! with each of the main cast having their own role in drawing viewers in
Yui (guitarist and vocalist) plays the role the ditsy girl that provides the set ups for a majority of the funny moments and bounces off of Ritsu's character very well
-
Ritsu (drummer) is best compared to a tomboy as she enjoys playing the drums and scaring the other characters (mostly Mio)
-
Mio (bassist and vocalist) is the serious character that usually tries to keep the band on track. She's also quite the scaredy cat which sets her up for multiple scenes of other characters scaring her
-
Asuza (rhythm guitarist) is also a more serious character that tried to keep the band inline. Asuza is the youngest in the band and often falls victim to being treated like a baby by Yui
-
Mugi (keyboardist) is the rich girl that allows the club to indulge in opportunities such as visiting summer houses during the holidays in order to practice and also provides the expensive treats that often distract the club from working. She is often seen taking pleasure in the simple things in life.
--
Sawa Chan (teacher and advisor) acts as the club's advisor, she is more often than not shown as being a sweet charger l character that is loved by the students for her kindness and beauty however sometimes her character takes a full turn and acts more hostile due to her guitarist past
Sound - 8 (Dub sound)
Considering this anime is about a light music club and band the music is few and far between although the music IS pretty good when it does finally come into play and generally has an upbeat tone that gets your body bouncing even if you don't notice straight away
The acting is also done well with the characters sounding pretty much as you'd expect:
Yui being high pitched and cutesy to match her ditsy personality.
-
Ritsu having an almost raspy voice to match her tomboy tendencies.
-
Mio and Asuza both having serious voices for the most part to compliment their work-then-play attitudes.
-
Mugi having a high 'wow everything is amazing' voice to match her habit of being happy 90% of the time and finding everything (including silverware cleaners) to be cool and interesting
-
Finely Sawa chan for the most part having a sweet voice letting her maintain her image of kind teacher, while also being able to switch to a volatile, raspy tone when letting her inner rock star shine
Enjoyment 7
Overall the show is pretty enjoyable if you enjoy anime that don't follow a strong plot and generally don't have a very episodic nature. While watching K-On! you can relax, turn off your brain and just mindlessly tune in, all while being provided with laughs.
You can also opt to be an active viewer, fully engulf yourself in the show and take in the show's small pieces of plot and receive a little bit more enjoyment from the anime
Overall - 7.2
In conclusion K-On! is quite enjoyable and is a good way to provide yourself with some laughs, it has likeable characters, catchy music and a nice art style so it'd be recommended that you watch it rather than take a pass on it.
