Well, this was kinda suprise for a job offer, being an representative to being send out to investigate habitable planets, and ordered not giving a crap about the inhabitants since well....... EVERYTHING TO SERVE THE COMPANY RIGHT?????????
No !!!!!! if u have little experience in dealing with stuff and the main charachter being a bit of an airhead, this ova is quite comical, with a dark twist in the end i never expected.
The art and animation is def. oldskool, gritty, taperecorded and everything, not too proffesional tey gave a little kiddo touch to it , except to the local people of the planet ( oh ideas
...
man where have they went since 2003) and its something you maybe have to get used to.
For and short ova that mostly revolved around a young business-planet representitive and a young humanoid girl with the locals fighing it out its pretty funny and adventurous at the same time wich make more sense when more is clear about who lives on the planet, developing into something that could made a serie out of it i mean just the potential you bastards!!!!
The studio that made this took a bite out of the OVA cake since a lot of it was influenced by 1980's futuristic anime, you gotta love it, oh and Robot companions ( just 1 in this case) they always give a feeling of security even when the carachter is a bum but occasionaly for being an airhead can use its head!!only in heated moments.
This was more like a straight up anime that din't go into starmaps, spacebattles , alien invasions or anything that was time consuming ( yeah deadline alright) but i for the most part enjoyed it, even for the just 1 female charachter, i could go with it and the purpose of the locals well.... just watch it.
Overall i enjoyed it for what it was but more could be pulled out of it to be fair

This is truly a francise than in Japan held a household name in the 1990's ova/ RPG boom and for GOD-BLOODY SAKE its not available on dvd ( maybe LCD), still to me a gem in the category of being an amethyst.
This storyline is goe's further in detail about the purpose of wataru and got rid of the mecha's and using more magical powers and creatures, wich honestly stalled a bit in the previous 2 serie's, and replacing it by protecting a dragon but i think some of the change is for the better, i mean sometimes the formula loses its taste after so many
...
seasons but THANK GOD no fillers, unlike a lot of 21 century anime,w ich some exceptions on late 80's ,90's long running t.v shows but not nearly as bad as todays anime.
As for the art, the animation has been improved ofc since it was 1993, yeah just improved .
What i like the most about the sound is the ED music soundtrack , ok i just watched this anime a while ago ( not 1993) but the music from that time i remember, and i couln'd stop dancing and you just figure out why :).
Soooo happy st see the apperances of most of the previous serie's original charachters in all their glory, but i even was happier to see a new enemy on the scene and a strong , relentless one to say.
The feeling of a adventure rpg anime is always going for a intense, but positive feeling and i am a fan of that , even to compare the anime to the videogame is a though behind for example Dragon quest, still to me its an anime that kids these days prob would have liked, u can watch it with almost ppl from all age's.
Overall this is a good ( without the re-imagine serie's ) a very enjoyable closure of the serie's , but the problem in once again the availabillity and even if its sold u can count spending an easy 250-325 Euro on the boxset serie's since its japan import, on this case its just with pain in my heart to say its better to download this.

Well its just too bad that i never had the honor to play the original game if i owned a famicon, or super famicon .
The story itself how it progress is slightly diffrent from its prequel and by that i mean its still has that rpg adventure type when a boss from a realm ( level) has been defeated, wataru and friends do to rises to another level with a secret or extra stage inbetween, the diffrence is that each realm has a discription, the enemy fighters has stats on them like power, speed, stanima and/ or magic.
Artwise its still the same art since
...
its 2 years since the serie started, though it was 1990 so there may be some sight improvements by tape recording and colour editing and stuff compared to late 80's , but in the biggest part not much is diffrent, same can be sayed by the sound and the OP/ED parts, tough could be repetitive at some parts and episode's.
The charachters still had their personality like the 1st serie's , with some new friends, enemys , powers, magical creatures to add, and some returns as well. i really liked how they kept a lot of the chara involved throughout the show end even when it all took a darker tone in the last 5 episode's , by that
it kept the potential going and even though today it only is famous by a select few outside of japan , overall its worth a watch if u are not minded to watch a kidsshow, but prepare if ever comes a sub-version on bluray or dvd to have some deep pockets, japan import ofc, still worth it!

If you're talking about the horror factor of 3 of the 5 Rumic world ova's ( Maris the choujo and Fire tripper not included) than Mermaid forest is the best one that give's the scare, an raw uncut amethyst, and using a story from an ancient folklore about mermaids has been adapted as a very supersticious subject among pirates and other seamen since the 17th century, it really worked out quite well to use the story 'unlike the sequel ' wich i started to fucking hate!!!!!
The animation looked pleased for its time, tight handdrawn technique without too much pencil overshadowing and a more
...
mature look to the charachters.
In 1991 there where still lloads of animation studio's that used cheaper recording/sound tapes and still drew anime like it was 1987, though sometimes VHS also could downplay the production but that was normal the time, still this looked like and uncut , raw amethyst in its respect and good transfer of the pale colours used in the first 10 min or so , to the good indeep colourfull animation.
I din't really had put my attention to the music, though it had some good musictones at action packed or violent scene's , no its not like I LOOOOOOVE 1991 HOUSEMUSIC this is a horroranime for godsake ( not like there was any dancemusic in the anime or something) but if youre ol enough you can maybe recognise some old horror elements
Some of the Charachters where interesting , and that story goes back 80 years before 1991, in 1936, it all began as the ova describe's and basiclly most of the charachters involve themself in the legend of eating mermaid flesh in an attempt to be immortal , even unwanted persona got heavenly tempted by it , thoughout the ova u see the struggles of the familly and the unfaitfull but strongminded Mana and Yuta, to see it all to a bitter end, or at least hoping for the least negative outcome, and others just where not strong enough to eat the mermaids flesh and dies right the next second you choose ur pick.
for me i mostly enjoyed the plot wich u think can go into a general scripted direction, but takes u by suprise and the way how some of the charachters respond to it, and its not the best horror anime i've seen but certainly entertaning enough to keep u going, just something different instead of a lot one way directed digitalized anime these days, i choose my oldskool ova,s any fucking day! enjoy !!!

NO SHIT THAT JAPAN KEEPS THEIR BEST STUFF FOR THEMSELVES !! ):
Lots and Lots of chibi charachters, Sunrise Inc after the huge success of the gundam serie's that at that point aired from 1979-1988 (char's counterattack was the latest one at the time) found somewhat a new populair direction by creating a more kid friendly serie's in addition/rivalised of Toei Animation's Dragonball serie's wich was gaining hto uge popularity rating in japan, Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru , with a huge pointer to Dragons since that is very important in japanese culture.
The whole serie itself is more a friendly mix between RPG, Action adventure,
...
Mecha's wich sunrise was best in doing and deformed charachters with funny traits to give, even for the villians.
The first wataru storyline goes about a legend that saved the 1st godrealm ( there are i believe 3 realms in total according to the ova' and last serie's storyline) and that hero was named 'wataru', and it seems a 9 year old boy is a descendant or something of that legend and is asked to cleanse the godrealm of darkness and let the rainbow shine.
Animation reallly fits for its time beeing it a kidsshow both the OP & ED to me was likable because some of the singing was stuck in my head together wich the good ol oldskool popmusic, and the models looked drawn very colourfull and funny even for the bad one's with a very positive look at 'chibi'as i said, with every now and then some strange behavior is sometimes a good thing to keep the show going.same for the mini mecha models that is personalised for every charachter wich their own unique powers and abillitie's
Musicwise: Copy, Cut& Paste wich was quite normal at the time and cheaper to do it, how repetitive it became god only knows, it could use some more variation for my account!
The charachters were one of the main things that made the show populair and shows a very strong diffrence in personality's, behaviors, looks ect ect.
but fun nevertheless, wataru himself is not a typical hotheaded ambitious type , more a heroic, helpful boy just to point out, and i like the side chara as well for their part.
I enjoyed it for a big part minus the 2 or 3 fillers every 10-12 episodes but then again it summaries some previous chapters, but the biggest enjoyment of it all was the rpglike action adventure encounters wataru and his friends had, returning all inhabitants to a normal state.
overall i give it a 7/10, good to enjoy for a kids show , could give some more so hopefully the next serie's (minus the ova wich i have seen) give some less repetitive music and some more new encounters with more actionpacked scene's and a more darkerside storyline!

IT IS ALL GODDAMN WORTH IT!!!!! the problem is.... Where the hell should i start??? i still have some remnants of overexcitement & jumping out of the chair moments that i had some hard time to hold me and my childhood in check( yes i was i in my inmagination a fucking young prat again, just like in the happyer days).Toei animation once again shows me why that studio is my #1 fav. by showing traces of stuff what they can do best and what has famed/immortalised them for in the anime world, and thats has been a standard for them since 1984( hokuto no
...
ken) wich made them notable ofc and so on.
Bandai co. was back then a big distributor and giver of ( in partnership with toei amongs other studio's) videogames based of populair serie's and merchandise, and had partnerships with developers like sqare enix, wich is since 2003 called squaresoft i believe and namco.
Dragonquest is still one of toei most beloved and prominent products ever since 1986 ( it started out on the Famicon, EU had the nintendo modified for the market, and the PC-Engine system wich is mostly unknown outside Japan) and has been seen as one of the first RPG franchises, little before Shin megami tensei(1987- ongoing) or the Final Fantasy series ( 1987 ongoing)
or the breath of fire serie's ( 1989-??) to name a couple. sadly i've only played some old rpg but never the first release of the serie's.
The story itself give's WAY more than the summary says i mean omg shit became intense halfway through!! and remember , its LOOSLY based so it means than some elements and /or npc's dont even appear in the game itself
but does not take away the potential of what it could do more and adds a extra taste to it in following the 'Rpg guideline, the further u get and more levels u unlock, the harder the enemies and terrain unlock special artifacts , meeting new charachters, upgrade items ect.ect.
Animationwise, if Dragonball never exsisted, there would never been Dragonquest, like 2 drops of water.
The soundtracks itself fits , but gets repeated a lot during action scene's.
If we imagined to take a peek inside goku's head what he is dreaming about to be a legendary hero in a fantasy world we got this:
Abel=Goku
Young abel = 13 year ol gohan
Mokomoko =Yasirobi
Slime ( the onion like creature's abel has a blue one) he calls ChiChi
Baramos the devil= Hatchiyack from the DBZ ova plans to eradicate the sayians ova
Tobi = a long silverhaired trunks
Jikoku= a demonlike overambitious impression of vegeta
just to name a few.
i enjoyed the fullest out of this show and is a FREAKIN DISGRACE that it never had a official DVD release outside japan, yeah keeping the best shit for themself alright ):
Overall, i would watch it all over again because it appears as a kidshow but it give's a very colourfull and dark aspect in itself , and its damn funny plus its is one show that makes a lot memorable thanks to a lot of positive factors!!!
I LOOOVE DRAGONQUEST!!!! u got + 1 up life

Magical hatto!!! at my age this is as far i can go with kids anime but then again, it was a load of fun and maybe it was not as notable at the time like the Mashin eizan wataru serie's ( 1988-1993) or the dragon quest serie's ( 1989-1992) wich had a lot of funny elements in it , magical hatto was something to watch with the whole familly.
To me at first it looked kinda awkward and pinkcheesy as hell, but if u look past the fillers and some of the sing-a longs segments it give's a good laugh with some memorable moments.
The story itself
...
is not too complicated, more or less been inspired by other kidslike anime but a Hat than can transform anything out of a hat by saying ...: Magical hatto karukaru shiba something ..... well and some of the most redicilous and over the top ( from a kids point of view) items gets summoned or transformed, fun fun fun.
The animation itself looks ok but could be a bit better, not the animation backgrounds itself but some segments looked kinda cheaper and duller , then again there is a great job with some visual effects for its time, funny looking animallike creatures and kidfriendly monsters.
Musicwise the sound in my ears sounded like a very cheap early 80's cave recordings, especially the singing sounded mediocre as well the opening intro.
I asked myself when the serie's ended about the parents of hat, u see them in the begiinning , something happens and u never see them again , not even in the end. The rest of the casting was quite good, even the villians and henchmen gave me a good laugh out though magical hatto is the main persona , with one grampa wich could be seen'as a sort of 'loremaster of devildom' a doglike boy wich has been introduced from the 1st episode and an adventrous but treasure greedy girl, an talking magical egg and some half robotic animals captured by Hat.
I mostly enjoyed it when the villians henchmen try numerous times to get the Magical hat, but when they finally got it they got outwitted in someway that is sooo damn funny, and when peace finally comes to the land a bloody musquito fucks the whole peace treaty up! din't saw that one coming.
Overall an 8 based on the positive content and prob what little kids back then assumed as an after day school t.v program , even though sound prod. and art droppings gave it a several dents

I've seen far more worse and better anime OVAs in the 26 years that I've watched anime. Dragon century is for me quite in the middle and since this was like other OVAs a one-shot title it was '' bearable" but as well it seemed a bit unclear if you don't watch it several times to get it. First of all part 1: 1990 AD, I was surprised by the violent content and would have LOVED IT if I was like 12 years old or something :).
Clearly there you can see how the human dominion comes to a crash course once dragons appear
...
with very bloody consequences (don't be a bitch by the amount of blood if you can't stomach it) and a girl gets involved by saving a dragon egg that hatched.
But as the story progresses there is a meaning to the dragons appearance when a demon god fucks up the human world and needs to be stopped and in some way the girl and dragon do it, leaving some destroyed buildings around, and a timerift opens so dragons can enter the human world.
Part 2 on the other hand, you will be confused the 1st time because it starts in a new era named R.C 272 ( Ryuu Seiki translated to Dragon Century) .
It appears that the human world is changed in to a human/dragonworld where
dragons that lives far longer than humans are used as pets, fighting in arenas for fame.
The young hatched dragon from part 1 is now a few hundreds of years old and encounters a young girl that possibly is a grandchild in the future related to the girl in part 1, and for some reason the demon has be revived or whatsoever which is time for the dragons to stop and save their world, and it felt unfinished.
The animation was 'respectable for its time', it was cheap but not THAT cheap, but hey what do you expect from one-shot 2 part ova.
The characters themselves were quite good, I had hoped that a bit more attention was given to the dragons since they are the main part of the story, but I had no problems with the female character, she had an undaunted, non airheaded, strong believing and understandable personality that drops heavily in part 2. Part 2 had more dragon characters and human characters but was all about it.
It was enjoyable on the basis that it's just a short popcorn OVA and was good to me but could have brought soo much more potential on the goddamn table, but after so long it is forgiven. So yeah in the end its up to you to make a opinion.

This is my 2nd Rumic World ova i,ve seen from the 5 part metaserie's , but i gotta write a review about it because i loooooove Maris the choujo( from the over the top P.O.V) and i have the feeling that female charachters had given more respect back then compared to today , reason:
despite the stereotypical highschoolgirls in anime and sometimes bimbo's ,quite some female counterparts had a tough, strong chara development without airheaded fuckups of today, Yes they did some girly things that looked funny and redicilous at the same time but when it came to it, keeping their spirits up and
...
a clean head,Bubblegum crisis, Alita, Maris the choujo, Project a-ko, slayers, gall force ect. ect. respect to anime ladies to write some down.
Maris the choujo was one of those ova meta series that was a one shot project that became notable during the ova boom of the 80's and continued some time though it first started out as a manga ofc, it also have some connection (i think ) to the Urusei Yatsura serie's starting in 1982.
The story to me was interesting , not too difficult to understand with great comical contents and moments, and as well is that like loads of other anime around was a sci-fi story with a loose background but still fun.
I had no complaints of the art i,m used to 80;s anime and it looked coulorfull, not too adultlike and ( ok some drops ) but its up to u what u are used to,and yep it was all handdrawn, pen & goddamn paper.
1980's rockmusic mixed with synthersizer and solo's ya can't go wrong with that, i enjoyed it like it was a timemachine trip FFS!!!
Maris, thanosian that is 6x stronger than an earthling and even with restrains on........ oooh boy and one more thing besides that they can destroy everything with a touch and maris work herself into depts in a hilarious way together with her nine-tail fox assistant wich sometimes use powders to confuse maris , Thanosians are also very greedy since their planet tragically got destroyed so money, silver, gold everything of value is THEIRS in a way stealing it or working for it, once again with funny moments without too many pullbacks
It was an enjoyable ova to me because for its time ooooooh i forgot( there is a splitsecond scene were u see a darth vader lookalike sitting at a bar)
enjoyable because of the popculture references, over the top fights and a not too tragic but interesting background in all and all 4 charachters have been the side core of this anime though it was more centered at Maris .
Overall: 7 hilarious scene's, good story animation, sometime's a bit gritty and droppings , and unclear for ppl it they want to find a story connection to the rumic worlds series of the urusei yatsura makings. but if u love ova's and the over-the-top anime from back then, here u are and hopefully it makes u want to watch the whole serie's , cuz i am! Fuck the paperthin cardboard female charachters from today, just too bimbo and annoying

IT WAS ALL WORTH IT!!!!this gem is too rare, and something thats Toei animation's 3rd biggest asset after the hokuto no ken and dragonball franchise i'll say that by seeing dragonquest , my childhood can be thrown straigt out the window......you saw it?? there it goes. My childhood needed something like this but sadly it seems like Dragonquest is like a ' japan anime exclusive' something VERY HARD to collect on dvd or elsewere in the western world wich i would die for, and proves for me that once again Toei is my favorite anime studio.
Dragonquest a.k.a Dragon warrior started out in
...
1986 on the Famicon console( modified in the west and known as the nintendo) wich i believe was developed by Bandai&.co before it was adapted in to books, then anime starting Dragonquest: abel yuusha densetsu in 1989, and even now videogames are available for the nintendo DS systems.
The story is adapted in a way that most rpg elements are there, but the story is a bit extended and slighly adapted, you start as the boy called Dai on a island (starting zone)and is friendly with almost every creature on the island because there was a dark ruler that posseses everything, and only 4 chosen figures could save the land , because of that story Dai wants to become a hero through his retainer and master called brass.
Things really start to kick off when master brass feels increasing dark energy and strange things happen , and therefore trains Dai with spells and magical equipment,
and later on more interesting ( party members) appear wich become's a very important matter like:
Master spellcaster and swordmaster avan and his apprentice POP,
the brave but lovely long-range fighter Maam
The brave but bold armored crocodile
the knight with a sad past Hyunckel
A princess that needed saving, forgot her name
a very cool thing about it is the follow up of the bosses and the choice to join them, like in the videogame's but they first need to be 'dispelled' and defeated, and the locations and journey all are soooo fun to enjoy watching .
Dragonball orientated animation, child-friendly and coulorfull i mean come on thats clear!
The music was fitting with the mood of every episode and for its time ofc and the al famous soundeffects that only Toei back than did.
I love almost all charachters, from the heroes, side-charachters till the villians because everyone had a story to tell that tied in the past, or something thats unfinished to pursue their goal, and there is no lack of charachter and lore content .
Jumping outta my skin, i had that multiple times during some very intense and dark scene's , and yelling in happiness when a boss got defeated yes i enjoy it THAT much.
overall : 9 and thats sadly on behalf of the production , i saw the good ol VHS version dat needed a update and a freakin release in the western world, it drives me nuts that serie's like that is like almost well ..... unheard of or something. damn glad i watched it
