Story 9/10
Don't be fooled if you think that this would be a normal baseball anime with just good action scenes, exciting team plays, and emotional "Let's aim for the championship" scenes. Hiding behind this facade is the psychological warfare the main character has with each and every one of his opponents, reading their minds and bending them to his will. Watching Tokuchi using his wits all while playing within the rules of baseball and the ridiculous contract he signed with the main antagonist of the series will keep you off your seats when he pulls off unthinkable plays. Although the story is still basically about
...
winning every game and aiming for the championship, the process and tactics used are extremely satisfying to watch.
Art 7/10
For an anime in the 2000s, I do not have any complaints. The character art can be pretty hard to digest at the start with tough and fierce-looking characters. But once you get used to it, the art style definitely suits the story well.
Sound 6/10
Typically how you would expect a baseball anime ost to sound like with the occasional suspenseful music when Tokuchi thwarts his opponents' schemes or when he comes up with a master plan. Works with the anime but nothing really special.
Character 8/10
To be honest, all the other team members are just there to act as tools for Tokuchi to carry out his plans to win the game. There are a few characters including the antagonists that have interesting personalities, but none can hold a candle to Tokuchi with his twisted and intelligent personality.
Enjoyment 9/10
The only score that really matters, I really enjoyed watching One Outs even though I know close to nothing about baseball. Having prior knowledge may be useful to understand the game better, but definitely unnecessary to have to fully enjoy the anime. Definitely give it a shot if you are looking to watch a different style of sports anime.
