Sayonara no Asa ni Yakusoku no Hana wo Kazarou

I think the biggest similarity between these two movies is that they’re parent-oriented tear jerkers. If you’re looking for a grogeous movie to sob to, look no further. The lead in both is a single mom trying her darn best for her kid (s). Sayonara is a fantasy based worl that includes dragons, mythical races, kings and warring kingdoms, while wolf children focuses on a modern Japanese setting. There’s strong character growth through both, which includes the children and the parents. You’ll cry for both, so get the tissues ready.

Bounen no Xamdou
add

The same studio worked on Xamdou so the animation is just as gorgeous. More than that, both are written splendidly, with good world building and character development while avoiding all that filler a lot of other shows fall victim to. Eureka seven has a colorful and abstract world, with characters that have been through a lot that needs to be unpacked- Xamdou thrusts you into a colorful world in the thrusts of a very alien war, bringing you along with characters that grow and attach themselves into your heart. I cannot recommend either of these series enough, if you like Eureka Seven you should really do yourself a favor and try out Xamdou.

Darling in the FranXX
add

Giant mechs piloted by young kids in love? Yep, it’s one of those series. Rahxephon plays a more into the Neon Genesis Evangelon wave while Darling takes a page from both that and Gurren Lagann. Darling isn’t as abstract in a lot of its themes, and has solid character development and growth.

Akagami no Shirayuki-hime

Reimei no Arcana
add

Reimei no Arcana hits that sweet spot of romance with solid character development, and fleshed out world building with a solid story. Shirayuki-hime does all of this with a bit more of a light hearted atmosphere; Arcana is a bit more rough on the emotions but completely worth the plunge. On a more superficial level, they both star a red head lead, a romance with royalty, and the taboo of not being accepted by society. Completely unique in their stories, but each completely worth your time.

Noragami
add

If you’re a fan of the supernatural, fighting demons, and a touch of school life you’ve found the right series. Noragami and Kyoukai no Kanata have very similar atmosphere and gorgeous animation, coupled with some golden comedy to lighten the dark parts of the story. Lovable characters, enticing action sequences, and a tiny bit of the touchy feely. Noragami and Kyoukai have such a similar feel not just in story but in setting, while being completely unique to each other. If you enjoyed one of these I highly recommend you check out the other.

Itsudatte Bokura no Koi wa 10 cm Datta.
add

Slice of life, high school, and slow burn romance? Look no further. Kimi ni Todoke beats around the bush a bit more with its romance, while Itsudatte feels a bit more straightforward. Kimi ni Todoke has more character development, while the characters in Itsudatte are a bit more fleshed out from the start.

Hinata no Aoshigure

Hinata no Aoshigure plays off of the same child like whimsy that carries the charm in Ponyo. Strong imaginative visuals and childlike wonder are heavy themes in these movies and if you enjoyed Ponyo, Hinata no Aoshigure is worth the watch.
