This is my first review. I've tried writing a few reviews in the past, but they've turned out bad. Hopefully this is somewhat useful though. I've tried to tone down spoilers as much as I can, buit as I'm writing down my feelings of this show, it'll be pretty hard to eliminate them completely.
[SPOILERS]
The show started off great. The first episode was impactful, and I really felt attached to the nameless boy, even though I had only known him for 20 or so minutes. He died, giving Fushi his first form. This was the only episode to really make me cry. In fact, it's the
...
best episode of the entire series, and is worth watching for this episode alone. I'm then introduced to March and Parona. They're really close, they might as well even be siblings. March then dies. Right at that moment, I thought to myself "Oh no, all of the characters I get attached to will die, won't they?" - and I was right about that.
Sometime after this, Fushi develops speech. And it only took him an episode or 2 to get pretty much almost fluent. I feel like he developed speech way too quickly, they could've made the change more graduel.
The next arc was about Gugu. I found Gugu to be really likeable. He and his older brother are poor. At a market, he meets a girl and falls in love with her. He later on ended up saving her from being crushed by a large log. Because of this, he lost his face. Because of this, people shunned him him. He meets Fushi and they develop a brotherly bond. At this point, I'm starting to get attached to Gugu. Then Gugu dies.
At this point, I'm sad for what's coming next, since the show gets you emotionally attached to a character, only to kill them off. I'm also a bit fed up of this as well, as it's starting to get pretty repetitive.
The Janada Island Arc was a disappointment. This arc made me drop my score from an 8 to a 7. I didn't feel bad for Tonari or her friends at all. I just found Tonari to be pretty unlikeable. I wasn't really a fan of the tournament, which was a key part of the arc. I feel like they didn't develop Tonari's friends enough at all. I couldn't even make myself shed a single tear for them.
Overall: It's a great show, but it starts to get repetitive, only to end with a pretty bad arc.
