I really want to like this series. I really do. The character interactions are some of the best, my favorite trope of seeing opposites forced to work together, or learning to understand each other, or not understanding each other but comparing their ideals, but this series falls flat in everything else.
Again, the characters are the best part. In the beginning, the characters were not as developed compared to Dazai who quickly overshadows them after season 2’s prologue. The new characters are interesting and the old ones get the well needed development they’ve been needing since season 1 through this season and the last.
Sadly, the
...
story they take place in takes away all their strength. Why have a serious or tension filled story if you’re not going to kill the characters off? Time and time again, we see them get thrown through the worst and yet all come back unscathed. Their ideals and beliefs get put to the test, yes, we want to see it, but where’s the fulfillment if they get away with everything? What’s the point of being excited or anxious of what’s going to happen next if everything is going to be okay in the end in a unsatisfactory way? Sure, not all of them can die, but at least have some risk like an injury or lost of ability. Anything! It could just be the anime but the pacing is rushed and theirs no give for characters to carry the story. Instead, they're being dragged along until the end.
I don’t even want to talk about the ending. Fyordor, the man so smart that can tell cards apart by small scratches couldn’t tell that Chuuya was cosplaying? His final moves did not make sense for how untrusting he is. I knew it was going to go down hill too when Dazai explained how he was speaking to the outside world. It was incredibly disappointing and obvious the author couldn’t find a way around it. Plot holes are tied messily together, and I doubt the manga is going to alter the ending in any way.
I was really excited to see how this arc ended, but sadly, I wish it could of been anything else.
