I discovered this anime a few months ago while I was randomly going through netflix's library for a new anime to order. I have to admit that when I decided to order Berserk, I was highly critical of it even before I popped it in my DVD player, most likely because of what I considered at the time a mediocre storyline and because of the date this particular anime was made, 1997, making me think automatically that the art would dissappoint. However, even with my initially critical attitude toward the series, by the time I made it through the first 4 episodes, ... I was hooked. I have thoroughly enjoyed Berserk and haven't since regreted my choice in watching it. I would've given it a 10, but for certain reasons, I must grade it as a 9.

Here are some of my findings:

Story - Great (9)
As I soon found out, there's so much more to the story that the summary doesn't tell you. It's full of intrigue and once you start, you won't be satisfied until you reach the final episode. You might think you know where the story's going and how it's all going to end, but then it takes a huge unexpected turn that will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Art - Very Good (8)
Although not on par with most of today's 'modern' anime series or movies, I was very impressed by the artwork in Berserk, particularly with the charcters. Each character's apperances are unique to them alone and are very original. My only real negative comments are that there are frequent what I call 'stop-action' scenes when only an illustration is shown during parts of an intense battle and that several of the backgrounds in the first half of the series seemed to be a rough scetch more than anything else. Regardless, many of the stop-action scenes add to the effect that the creator was trying to portray and the well-drawn characters more than make up for the sloppy backdrops.

Sound - Great (9)
I was also impressed by the voice acting done in Berserk. Hearing the poor acting of many other animes made in the 1990s, I assumed that Berserk would be the same. However, I found the cast to be very talented and they all spoke their lines well and with the neccessary emotions for their characters. As for the sound effects and music, I have to admit that I was so engrossed with every other aspect of the anime that I didn't pay too much attention to them, but the fact that I have nothing negative to say about them is a good thing at least.

Character - Outstanding (10)
The characters in this anime are amazing. Their individual stories and motivations are portrayed excellently and they're the reason for Berserk's success. Together with the voice actors, they make the viewer feel what they feel and essentially become a part of the story, if that's making any sense. Most of the characters are relatable to reality in some form and aren't all just generic sterotypes. What else can I say? This is one of the greatest aspects of the show.

Enjoyment - Outstanding (10)
I enjoyed this anime to the very end. Sometimes, depending on the anime, it might seem like a task to go through to the last episode, maybe because of its predictability or poorness in other areas, but this anime was fantastic. I really mean it. It's always going to be one of my favorites.

Overall - Great (9)
Overall, this was a great, enjoyable anime from start to finish. I'd recommend Berserk to anyone who likes historical, war, swordplay, bloody action, or just a great classic anime. Be warned though that this anime does contain relatively graphic scenes throughout, profanity, adult (and often disturbing) situations & themes, and frontal-female nudity, including 3 non-explicit (in my opinion) rape scenes. But if you're at least an older teen and none of this bothers you too much, I highly recommend you at least give Berserk a try.

Ehh...I loved the first Fullmetal Alchemist, but what I've seen so far of Brotherhood...sorry but I don't really like what they've done with the characters. The art style is...well, sort of like pokemon in my opinion and so not in a good way. I understand that some people might want the series to follow the manga a lot closer, but I thought it was fine the way it was in the original. I feel like they're doing more damage than good with this series.

I was impressed. Even though most of the supporting (and some main) characters didn't play big parts in the movie or weren't there at all, I must say that I enjoyed it. The story was very thought provoking and very emotion-stirring. I'd only recommend this to people who are fairly familiar with the anime series though, otherwise you'll be completely lost.

This movie was alright, but I was a little dissappointed when I saw this on TV because I didn't know at the time that this forerunner of Blood+ only had three of the main characters from the series and they were VERY different. WHERE'S HAJI?!?! was my exact thoughts throughout the entire movie. But that aside, it was pretty good, the art reminded me alot of Ghost in the Shell and the dubbing was decent if I recall correctly. My only other negative comment is that the movie was a bit on the short side and it could've been a lot better if it was ... a little longer.

It's the best. You have your opinions and I have mine, but I'm pretty sure this will be one of my all-time favorite anime series if not my single all-time fave. Everything about this anime had me glued to my set and I have no problem watching it over and over again. The story is unique and gives you another look on vampires (cyropterins in this anime), the art was outstanding, the characters were realistic in how they responded to certain situations, and the cast was very talented. It never loses its entertainment value for me. I only wish the series were longer.
