So,just my opinion but it's been quite a long time since I've been into an anime this much. Seriously. No one knows how badly I'd crave a new ep every week, how I thought about it 24/7 every day of the week. It has got me back to drawing and writing, and that's just what it did for me. It's inspirational. What a load of malarkey,is what you are thinking.
To the point:
I have watched a number of sports anime but none of them really made me care enough to actually like the sport IRL.
I can't say that I'd try figure skating IRL,but this anime did
...
spark an interest in me. Likewise,I never really liked music either. But you know there was something about YoI that spoke to me. Everything was so well thought out
The characters I'd say are the strongest elements of the show. Sure , not everyone got as much screen time as Yuuri or Victor but we got enough to have an idea of who they were and what their goals were.
Yuuri is the most realistic portrayal of a person IRL in anime. He was someone I could relate to.
YoI has a funny way of making you love even characters you initially hated.
YoI has incorporated a lot of modern themes to it. It made use of various social networking sites, it shows you how viral and "scary" the media can be and it touches upon the concept of a gay couple (though not explicity stated,it's pretty obvious) which is an issue even today. The YoI world however is one where homosexuality is a norm like heterosexuality. The romance between Yuuri and Victor isn't the only or main focus of the show, though it is admittedly the most intriguing and distracting. The themes the skaters skate to all reflect what they skate for. The soundtracks,I can't stop listening to them. When's the last time an anime had english songs which weren't ENGRISH and actually made sense? And if you're a pet owner, the show has got something to tug on your heartstrings too.
YoI is a sports anime that doesn't occur in a school or school level. It has an international cast and has a number of adult characters.
What was quite amazing is how the competitions never felts like just an anime,it felt like I was watching an actual skating competition IRL. I felt actual chills nd anxiety when watching the skaters perform because the music and the situation the characters were put in made me so. Everytime someone messed up I found myself reacting to it.
Yuuri's breakdowns and hardships are all heavily emphasized to make you want to root for him. You want him to succeed. The same is done for the rest of the cast. You wan't them all to win.
The comedy is also very well done. It will also have moments that will make to tear up if not weep.
Now the animation may be a peeve to some. I didn't really mind as long as the story was comprehensible. I don't nitpick on art much so it didn't bother me much. Some people complained that e have to see the same routine over 4 times. There's a point to it. We see how much they've improved each time.
The ending did feel lackluster to me. Another episode may have done the trick but I guess it was decent enough after that final surprise scene at the end. Overall the anime was very enjoyable to me and I feel empty now that it's over. Hoping for a s2.
