Integrating into society is undoubtedly tough when one has been bred solely for a single purpose for as long as they can remember. ‘Suisei no Gargantia’ and ‘Violet Evergarden’ showcase a vision and an opportunity to open one’s eyes to look beyond the bloodshed and sacrifices of war into a world where there is something worth living for. ‘Suisei no Gargantia’ depicts a person’s sheltered life and the pilgrimage he has to go through when being thrown into a world of great bewilderment. Aside from the impressive animation, the show is able to draw out its tenacity whenever it portrays a view that requires a considerable level of emotion. A series that is deemed high stature with unequivocal originality is hard to come by, thus deserving recognition when it surfaces. ‘Violet Evergarden’ is the mother of all things magical and what ‘Suisei no Gargantia’ could have been had it expanded on its narrative. The story is of rich substance and audiences will find themselves laughing throughout this memorable journey…and crying during the most emotional of times. The quality of the animation and character expression are second-to-none, something worth acknowledging which is a commendation to the series.

The term ‘Overpowered’ simply cannot be expressed enough time and time again. There is no better feeling than putting oneself in the public spotlight to be look down upon by a superior being only for that food chain to be turned around and giving the hunter a taste of its own medicine. ‘Kakegurui’ hammers in an environment where power and position are determined by a person’s sheer will to control fate which in turn excludes fair play in an unwritten rule. The storyline and character development paves well with its gender inequality as can be seen by a lack of male characters at top positions but nonetheless can be considered a success for the show’s vision. Being able to reach the pinnacle of your dreams and lose it all in an instant will no doubt deliver incessant satisfaction to the audience with many indulging on the sweetness of revenge. ‘No Game No Life’ focuses on a journey by a pair of siblings that would love nothing more than to incite world domination. Unlike ‘Kakegurui’, the vibrant colourful animation sets a lighter tone to an otherwise competitive wonderland. Comedy is another element that plays right into the pleasant storyline due to the likability of the characters in the show. Armed with admirable intelligence and the hunger for success, the siblings venture out into the world in hopes of achieving greatness and being worshipped as the true almighty in their new world.

Imagine a world where fate demands to be corrected and it is willing to go through an endless binding cycle to achieve that purpose. The curse of time travel being portrayed at its best where the ones involved either witness gruesome deaths or experience it themselves. Happy endings are hard to come by but the future remains uncertain, it is up to the individual to decide the closure they deserve. ‘Boku dake ga Inai Machi’ showcases a game of cat and mouse that has seen it being dragged on for over 10 years in which all the tragedies that unfolded before us are planned by one single entity. The rich storyline that is full of substance accompanied by dark striking character expressions will undeniably leave your heart pumping while trying to anticipate the outcome of one’s action. ‘Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu’ convene its story through multiple layers of secluded mystery where it is not known how each event are related. Unlike ‘Boku dake ga Inai Machi’, this mystery-base story plays right into the show’s strength due to the final villain not being revealed blatantly while their true purpose remains an enigma. Commendation should also be given to the series with the way it prioritises its vision, the romance/harem is certainly noticeable but never overwhelm the true objective which is the storyline. Audience would certainly appreciate the character interactions and comedy which sets a lighter tone away from the frightening events that has all but left us bewitched.

Tired of watching ordinary detective shows? Well then, these series should keep your mind serene for the time being. More than just your typical detective series, the mixture of excellent action scenes and fine comedy followed by a robust storyline is not only eye catching but worthy of attention. ‘Kekkai Sensen’ places its focal point in a city where the diversity of species is nothing short of palpable. Aside from the strong plot and exemplary music, the character interaction in-between dying situation is something to be applaud whether it’s comedy or something crucial. For anyone who is in possession of a godlike ability, this can serve as a blessing but also a curse due to the consequences that comes with it. ‘Bungou Stray Dogs’ lays its foundation in a city where in the midst of a normal daily society, organization from two separate allegiances battle it out to achieve their desired goals. The show illustrates the result of one’s ability when used in a wrong way whether it’s by influence or self-gratification. The standout comedy and extreme scenes plays directly in favor to the overall impression of the show. Character-wise, one can only judge his/her worth by firm action because at the end of the day it’s the choices along the way that matters and fate is not something anyone should abide by.

Titan or kabane armageddon? Decide while you still can as the wretched world falls into a complete pandemonium state. With extraordinary theme songs/OSTs and animation to accompany these series, one can only hope they get the recognition they deserve. As for the main characters in either series, a male that received the abilities of the devil while showing signs of righteousness and naivety…a female with lethal skills and deadly passion who fights to protect the people she loves. Blatant similarities like these simply can’t be ignored when in front of one’s eyes. Shingeki no Kyojin demonstrates a species’ right to survive in a world engulfed in despair and death while having to clash with its own kind. In the midst of it all, humanity is at its last brink of hope with a fortress being its final defense. The show outshines in storyline with its well constructed plot and strong character emotions. Action sequence-wise, it is associated with some of the best scenes out there and the elements will not disappoint. Koutetsujou no Kabaneri centers on the saying that ‘retreating is better than dying’. Day after day, fortified cities are conquered and overwhelmed which lead to a retreat into the next safe haven. Unlike ‘Shingeki no Kyojin’, ‘Koutetsujou no Kabaneri’ is driven mostly by character development rather than the story itself and humanity has a higher survival chance due to more safe cities being out there.

The distinctive characteristic of the main detective in each series are indisputable with their carefree and lazy relaxing attitudes seemingly drawing attention. Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru focuses more on the gruesome side of crime and attention-grabbing phenomenon. The intensity of each upcoming case builds up and reveals something dark and sinister lurking behind the scenes. In an almost seemingly peaceful city bounded by natural order lies a dark secret. The minds of the society has been poisoned which in turn leads to a bizarre belief that no everyone is equal. It just goes to show that an unfounded law supported by absurd theories may spread chaos in the long run. 'Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo' focuses on a naive human race where control is everything. It shows how fragile the human minds are when manipulated to discriminate their own kind. The human outcast are trained in slaughtering enemies that would threaten the existence of mankind, making it a three way melancholy cycle. The unique thing about this show is that it brings in a huge variety of genres that normally wouldn't blend well together but in this case it did, not to mention the OST is something to be applauded. Overall the show is set up to fail in a sense but succeed in the end. 'Black Bullet' pushes the boundaries of cruelty to a whole new level while revealing the true nature of the humans we are sworn to protect. Children are forced onto the battlefield fighting men's battle and are widely expendable while the pitiful normal humans show no remorse towards these sacrifices. Being neither monster or human, the children were placed on a despairing wheel of fate where they had to kill one half (monster) of their kind and being rejected by the other half (human). The storyline actually stands firm throughout the character development and you will find yourself hyped with the breathtaking OSTs.

The feeling of being treated as an outcast without friends while struggling to get accepted back into society is daunting. However in the midst of such hopelessness, the heart of a person is what matters the most and that is what the main characters from their respective series have shown. In these series, clubs are formed as a sign of 'hope' and with it, strangers became friends for life. In terms of the core differences, ''Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai' focuses on a male character in a more comedic way where the people around him don't necessarily hate him but they don't want to know him either.'Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru' centers around a male character who acts as a sacrificial lamb to ensure the flower blooms for others. However, the most important aspect is the commendable 'idea' implemented in these series that have made them a success.
