This is a hentai. Watch it only if you're looking for hentai, especially if you have the typical weird hentai fetishes - rape fetish, power fetish, loli fetish, etc.
This is a well-made hentai but as an anime, I'm afraid I'll have to rate it a 1 because like all hentais, it has a shitty plot. All the time between the characters doing hentai-shit is to facilitate the characters doing more hentai shit later.
Oh and it also plagiarises Shield Hero, not that Shield Hero is a great anime to begin with but a hentai plagiarising Shield Hero has no business masquerading itself as regular anime. So
...
it deserves a 1.

I'm giving this season an 8, but I'm doing it VERY reluctantly. If I was asked to rate just the episodes up til the conclusion of the attack on Liberio, I'd have rated it a 9, maybe even a high 9.
Unfortunately, the whole story after the attack on Liberio just went downhill, spiralling down the abyss like nobody's business. The pacing got worse and worse, the characters' motivations are kind of off, which makes their choices a little hard to believe...
The most obvious example is the honorary Marleyans' unyielding loyalty to Marley. This doesn't just apply to Gaby, but to Pieck and Gaillard and
...
all the others. How are they not even a little swayed by Zeke and Eren? Especially Pieck's rationalisation at the last episode, "I don't trust Marley but I trust my comrades" Like, hello? Under Marley, you, your comrade, your family and all your descendants will be forever stuck as tools for war or just lesser humans. Like she said herself, once Marley squeezes them dry of their usefulness, they'll be discarded like a worn out mop.
If she said she's fighting Paradis for the people she's lost in Liberio and how both Marley and Paradis are treating people like tools anyway... I'd have found that more believable. Instead... we got this "I trust my comrades" bullshit. *smh* Anyway, that's just one example but I can't be bothered to raise more.
Low 8, borderline 7 for me.

This series is almost on par with School Days when it comes to being a negative example on how to deal with romantic relationships. The whole story is just lesson after lesson of "how to f*ck up your romantic life"
Almost every single character in the love quadrangle have no idea how to handle romantic relationships or deal with their own feelings like mature adults, and the sad part is, TWO out of four of these STUPID characters are CLEARLY adults.
The only reason this show is getting a 7 and not something lower is because the art is really not that bad and the OPs and
...
EDs are not bad as well. The story, well, I guess it's interesting like how a trainwreck is interesting? You know, like if you have that one friend who keeps f*cking up his/her romantic relationships and coming to you to talk about how he/she had f*cked it up, yet again? Yea, tt can be kind of interesting in that sort of way, when you're not pulling your hair out in frustration... yea... So, umm, if you enjoy that sort of thing, Yesterday wo Utatte is for you.

I stumbled upon this anime through a YouTuber's review of One Punch Man season 2. I'm not joking, and what an amazing find.
The YouTuber reviewing One Punch Man s2 was lamenting the drop in the show's animation quality because the genius animation team in charge of OPM season 1 had shifted over to work on Kimetsu no Yaiba. Curious by what sort of anime would tempt the godly animation team to go over I picked up KNY.
First off, true to the genius of this team of animators, the animation in KNY is GODLY. Truthfully, there is no anime released in 2019 that has art and
...
animation that's at KNY's level, that's how good it is. The background, the use of lighting, colours, the amalgamation of traditionally drawn art and CGI is flawless. It's ufotable, it's the team that made OPM 1, so yes, it's sublime. Can't find better words to describe it, just go watch it.
Next, the soundtrack. It's pretty good from the get-go, you can feel your emotional heartstrings being tugged exactly where the creators wanted them. But when you reach certain key episodes (yes, including the critically acclaimed ep 19), the pristine use of soundtrack to enhance the emotional intensity, the viewer's experience, would bring tears to your eyes. Literally.
The story isn't some mind-blowing novelty but it delivers. It focuses on familial bonds and the main character's kindness. It's shounen but with a softer, emotional touch. Maybe it's due to the author being a female. In any case, I really liked the story. The presentation of the family theme was done just right, it's not cringey, it's not cheesy, it's quite convincing so I found it an immersive experience.
Finally, I must say the ability of this show to amalgamate all the different elements, animation, lighting, soundtrack, fight scenes, emotional scenes, comedic effect, is really something admirable. Usually, a show can do well on a couple of things or even all the different elements but fail to amalgamate all these wonderful things into a cohesive viewing experience. But Kimetsu no Yaiba managed to synergise all its strong elements such that they become better than their individual parts.
I'm so glad I found this anime.

Honestly, I don't get why this anime is hyped. Perhaps the manga readers are hyped by whatever stories that aren't animated yet, but as a non-manga reader at episode 6, Vinland Saga barely met the threshold for mediocrity.
The art is uninspiring, the blend between CGI and traditionally drawn art is abysmal, the poor use of soundtracks failed to augment the emotional element of the story. What exactly is special about this anime?
Perhaps the premise of a Viking story is new (for animes, at least), but a fresh premise alone can't carry the whole show. While there are some plot points in the first six episodes
...
that are clearly meant to tug at your heartstrings, the abysmal execution just ruins the experience.
For me, it felt like I was shown a great advertisement for a burger, listing all the correct ingredients etc., but the execution was so bad, it made me wish I never got hyped up by the ad to begin with. Nothing feels more disappointing to an anime viewer than when the story is clearly trying to be "touching" or "emotionally affecting" but the scenes just fall short and end up bland.
Sorry guys, it's a solid 5 for me.
