I just came to say that Horimiya is one of the most wholesome and positive high school romance anime series I've ever watched. It kind of reminded me of classics such as Toradora, even though the romance is handled quite differently.
This won't be a long review, I'll just touch on a few key points. First, the characters are extremely believable, albeit over-the-top hysterical moments are sprinkled here and there throughout the series. It's a high-school romance, after all. What makes the series different is that Hori punches way above the standard anime tropes for a heroine. She's fleshed out amazingly well, even down to
...
her little kink toward the end (which I though would bother me but in the end I was okay with it).
The animation, music and graphics are all good, not your Shinkai type of amazing, or ufotable type of fluid but the camera angles, close ups and overall cinematography is very coherent with the story. And it all falls in place quite nicely. Again, the relationships between the characters are portrait astonishingly well, to the point you wonder if this has some "based on a true story" elements to it.
In the end, it's a "coming of age" romance just like thousands you already watched. What makes it special is that you feel how real it is, and you genuinely feel happy for the characters. It reminds you that true love, compassion, friendship all exist in the real world. It's a warm and positive slice of life story that you will keep in your heart and use it to warm yourself during cold and dark periods. I'm glad such anime exists.

Holy cow did this anime took a turn for the worse! The nice premise and mystery from season 1 turned into a weird and gore fest, focusing on something like a New World Conquistador story gone wrong. Without going into spoiler details, I will say that in season 2 we almost don't get any new information about the Abyss itself, the mystery forces at action there, the origin of the whole thing, or what's at the bottom.
Instead, we're thrown into a very bizarre horror story/social experiment/curse setting and stranded there for the most parts of the show. Death, sacrifice, trauma, morals, friendship and other deep
...
subjects are explored but from a very twisted point of view (which I normally like), and it's repetitive and mind numbing.
But to be honest, the main problem is that this season feels like a filler. You can easily squeeze these 12 episodes into 2 or 3. I haven't read the manga and I'm waiting for season 3 with hope, as I loved the original premise and mystery, but this season 2 is just not on par with the first one.

After all the hype and GR's review of best anime series I decided to give this Moe-looking anime a try. Let's start by the things this series does well.
The world - the lore and the world are pretty good, not gonna lie. The Abyss with its distinct ecosystem and all the layers, the Curse, the city on the edge, and the whole backstory feel consistent and interesting.
The music - you can't neglect a good soundtrack. The music is divine and gives a completely different feeling to this anime, sometimes in contrast with the cheery visuals (from the get go).
The characters - even though we're talking
...
12-year old kids here, they do feel quite real with believable emotions and reactions, albeit falling inside anime tropes most of the time.
The story - I'm a sucker for a good mystery. What's the origin of the Abyss? Who or what governs the physical laws inside? (I've just realized that if I ask another question I'll spoil the story:) ) So, yeah - the story is pretty engaging, at least in season 1.
Now a bit about the bad stuff.
Sexual perversion and connotations - I get the desire for contrast and shock but it's done in a very weird way... I can live with all the gore, it's quite okay but stringing a 12-year old kid naked as a punishment is a weird BDSM/pedo fantasy that I can not approve of. There's also some focus/obsession with piss and poop, and a couple of weird scenes where the anus is explored in some way or another.
I admit these instances are rather rare but they do leave a bad taste in your mouth (gross, pun not intended!). The other elements of Made in Abyss are strong enough by themselves not to rely on such cheap hooks and plot devices, bordering ecchi and hentai. But I tend to be conservative, this may or may not bother you.
Overall, the first season of this manga adaptation is great and deserves the hype. Things go downhill with the movie and the second season but more on that in the respective review.

This is a very good show. Don't let the naysayers trick you into thinking it isn't. Somehow it reminds me of Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, probably because of the classical music and how the story unfolded in the last two episodes. One thing drags this show down, and it's the 12-episode format. Had it been 28 or split into two-three seasons, it would've been an amazing series.
The production is high class, the intro reminds me of Cowboy Bebop, the animation is top notch, voice acting, music, everything is very well executed. I get where the criticism comes from, there's no time to flesh out
...
these stories on a deeper level. And the creators needed to reserve a few episodes for the overarching story.
But overall, I feel that the initial message and idea have been conveyed. It's a show about the meaning of life, and baseline moral things like good and evil, and I'm a sucker for those. The concepts and ideas are not new, but they are portrait in a clear and approachable way. There are some memorable characters inside as well, which speaks volumes for a 12-episode long series.

Violet Evergarden meets Spice and Wolf meets Sword Art Online
Disclaimer: This is my first review, even though I've been watching anime since I was a little kid (more than 25 years now). If you quickly peek at my list, you will find that I tend to prefer serious themes, more substance than action—things many people might find boring and/or old school. With that being said, off to the review.
First, the good stuff. The animation and music are both great—mature, relaxed, and flowing. It's a colorful world, living and breathing, full of people, creatures, plants, and so on. Some people say that the lore is irrelevant
...
to the plot, and to some extent, it is, but it serves the main goal of retracing Frieren's journey and reflecting on her memories and feelings in a new way.
I didn't find the plot boring or slow-paced; my favorite anime is Monster, after all. Character interactions are well-depicted and serve the purpose of the main story. Last but not least, there are some really cool battle scenes and a few funny moments here and there as well.
Now, about the things I don't like. To me, this anime exploits the same concepts as the critically acclaimed Violet Evergarden but falls short in many places. Violet brought me to tears with almost every episode, while Frieren managed to only touch the surface on many issues, such as the true meaning of life, friendship, love, and the fleeting passage of time from the perspective of a creature who lives thousands of years.
Frieren's quest to understand humans is analogous to Violet's quest to understand her feelings and emotions. The trouble is that all the plot devices in Frieren are very naive and shallow. They are repeated almost every episode and tend to be emotionally manipulative, but after a couple of episodes, they (unsurprisingly) don't work anymore.
Frieren is a good anime; it's a feel-good story that's quite enjoyable to consume. It's just not very original and sometimes too obvious with the plot and too emotionally manipulative in a way that lacks subtlety. There are much better series out there exploring the same subjects and ideas. I'm giving this one a solid 7, but I cannot fathom how and why this anime sits at the top of the MAL chart.
