Both stories follow a protagonist who is ultimately kind but struggles to connect with others because Sawako comes off as scary/creepy and Maria comes off as a devil/mean. Each protagonist has a boy that comes into their life to help them make close friends in their grade and learn about friendship. I would say Kimi ni Todoke is much more lighthearted in tone and content matter, but I think Maria and Sawako would be friends.

Both are gritty, and violent with a soft-hearted main character who gets dragged into a plot larger than himself. Both series use a power system that is unique to each character and there are varying forms of alliances and team-ups. Both have largely unexplained supernatural or illogical set-ups for their existing systems but are fun to watch.

Both are battle royale type shows where the characters' powers seem to exist without any definite logic or groundedness to their existence (A cellphone app is capable of giving them theie powers), though the powers have clear in-world limitations. Main male lead is a bit soft and an idealist where as the main girl is very powerful and falls in love with him quickly. Both are entertaining in a "turn off your brain and don't think about the logistics too much" sort of way.

All about connections with people who have stuff in their past they need to work through. Plots are weird but still a good time.

I think both of these shows follow similar shounen troupes where the main character's life is drastically altered by the actions of a rival race, and he takes up a sword. The protagonist's closest companion was turned into a member of the rival race against their wishes, but they still share a close bond. Similar themes about family and that the enemy isn't necessarily always a bad person/irredeemably awful.

They both give off similar vibes with a main protagonist who is hot-headed with a big heart trying to fight off an enemy they have more in common with than they think. Both have themes about family that are pretty similar.

Both shows put teenagers with their own troubles in baggage into robots to fight against an enemy that is otherworldly. Both explore the motives of their pilots and the greater mental states of humans.

The minds behind Promare can be traced directly back to Gurren Lagann. Just about anything Promare does well, you can probably find it done better or more fleshed out in Gurren Lagann. Galo, quite frankly, is an pale intimidation of Kamina from Gurren Lagann as well.
