It’s not often an anime has impressed me so much leaving me asking for more, let alone a hentai. When a hentai doesn’t leave you feeling like, “what the hell did I just watch?” it’s a masterpiece. However, like many 90’s hentai it’s a lot of wasted potential.
Main Synopsis: This is based off of a couple chapters from the “extremely popular” manga. Takamura Tooru is your typical student, currently his mum is in the hospital so for the time being he’s staying at a relatives place(not blood related). When he gets there he stumbles upon Manami. To his surprise Manami is now extremely attractive.
...
Manami is a very shy girl, due to her good looks she attracts a lot of guys, to her dismay this leads to a lot of bullying from the other girls and she is defenseless. However, Manami is not your typical girl. She has a split personality who only Toru and her know about. Her split personality is named, Nami. Nami is the total opposite of Manami, she’s mature, confident, strong, and very sexual. The main conflict of this show is that Manami and Nami’s personalities are fighting to become more dominate. Nami isn’t the dominate personality, so she’s at risk of disappearing. Nami gets emotional about not being wanted by anyone but Tooru convinces her both her and Manami have good qualities. When Nami is almost having sex Manami contacts her for the first time not to go through with it. On the second time Nami explains herself to Manami explaining they both need each other. Later on Manami gets emotional about disappearing as well but Tooru also convinces her that she has her good qualities and promises Manami that he will make sure neither of them disappears but Manami just wants to be herself. Tooru tries to figure out how Nami got created so maybe Nami can leave but in reality he wants them both to stay. Manami starts to feel bad wanting to get rid of Nami and ultimately decides things should stay the way they are. In the end Manami and Nami can live in harmony in the same body.
REVIEW OF THE PLOT: I honestly really like this story, it’s simple to understand and is very well written. This show actually has some funny moments in it and had me laughing a little bit not because it was cringey but because it was actually funny. Handling split personalities can be difficult. However, with Manami & Nami there’s a perfect balance, one personality doesn’t distract from the other, I’m not begging for them to constantly switch back and forth. Both of them have likable qualities and their own strengths and weaknesses. I can’t decide which one I like more. That kind of balance is hard to achieve even in well written anime. Seeing how Nami and Manami go about their days if very entertaining, it’s a very bittersweet feeling seeing Nami combatting Manami’s bullies, and being an anime girl who actually acts like an actual mature woman who isn’t constantly embarrassed about herself. Manami is a likeable character I love the way she carries herself, I just wish she was a little more confident. As for Tooru I actually like him too. Sure he’s a pervert, but he isn’t annoying like perverts in today’s anime. He legitimately cares about both Manami and Nami and wants the best for both of them. I honestly can’t decide who would make a better couple Tooru X Nami or Tooru X Manami. Other than that, I would rather have Manami be the main character. But that’s just my preference.
REVIEW OF THE PRESENTATION
The artwork was a very pleasant surprise. Late 90’s and early 2000’s anime designs are by far the best and it definitely shows in this hentai. Whenever Manami and Nami swap personalities their appearance changes slightly to reflect on that. Nami appears much more mature and serious, and Manami appears to be a little bit more self conscious. Tooru isn’t a bad looking guy either, he’s quite average but definitely not bad.
Overall, I recommend this to people who don’t take things too seriously. I honestly wish this wasn’t a hentai it would’ve been amazing as a regular anime with at least 20 episodes. I would’ve loved to see Manami and Nami conflict with each other a little more and seeing how Tooru would react. I watched this primarily for the plot and for an OVA that only has 2 episodes it’s well worth your time. There’s so much potential for something amazing but instead it’s wasted on being a forgotten hentai.

This is one of those OVA’s that leaves me asking for more. It’s almost perfect in everyway and I’m not exaggerating. Many 80’s OVA’s range from mediocre to boring, this is definitely one of the diamonds in the rough.
REVIEW OF PLOT: The makers did the best they could’ve done in 3 episodes. Basically summarizing the first 3 volumes of the manga. The story is a simple concept that’s easy to get into. It takes inspiration of Tutankhamun where a bunch of girls find a grave site in a cave unleashing an ancient type of bacteria that infects our two main characters, twin sisters, Rumi and
...
Ruka. Both are infected in different ways which shapes the plot and love interest.
Rumi and Ruka find themselves in a love triangle with a Katsuyuki who is basically, your shoujo anime knight in shining armor. Both of them as infatuated with him. Early on it is discovered that Katsuyuki chose Ruka over Rumi, at the time Rumi “handed” over her crush to Ruka but after the discovery of the gravesite that all changes.
Throughout the 3 episodes it’s discovered the extent of how Rumi and Ruka have been infected, Ruka at first doesn’t notice any difference but Rumi is nearly unrecognizable in terms of personality. Rumi goes from a sweet supportive twin, to a jealous homicidal maniac that will literally do anything to get with Katsuyuki even if it involves killing multiple people in the process. Other than Rumi’s personality she also discovers he has new powers she can use to get to Katsuyuki.
A lot of the anime has Ruka and Katsuyuki on the run from the evil Rumi which always creates a lot of tension, and strengthens their love for each other. It’s done exceptionally well in this OVA. Unfortunately since that this is only 3 episodes we don’t get to see their full romance because both of the love interests compliment each other perfectly. Now I should explain the characters.
Ruka may strike some people as a stupid protagonist, but she is going through the stages of disbelief. She is extremely trusting of her older sister and hasn’t come to terms that Rumi is now a mass murderer that wants nothing more than to kill her own sister. Throughout her life she’s always been in Rumi’s shadow, but desperately wants to be more confident. The turning point in her and Rumi’s relationship is when Katsuyuki shockingly picked her over Rumi.
Katsuyuki is a very likeable guy and definitely isn’t your typical dense anime guy, in fact he’s quite forward and confident which makes his chemistry with Ruka very good.
To explain Rumi, she’s crazy and lusts over Katsuyuki to a disturbing degree. Definitely the perfect villain to this love triangle.
REVIEW OF PRESENTATION: This is peak 80’s shoujo anime. The visuals are very well done, characters look good and are a decent upgrade from the manga. The only thing I would nitpick is the lack of an opening and ending. It’s just stills from the manga. I would’ve preferred a nice 80’s song to go along with it.
Overall, Umi no Yami, Tsuki No Kage is an underrated and unappreciated gem. It leaves me screaming for more. The fact that only 3 of the 18 volumes of this wonderful series got turned into an anime is a complete injustice. For what they were able to accomplish in 3 volumes is incredible and it drew me in right away. Because of this OVA I bought all the volumes of the manga. I highly recommend this to everyone and I try to show as many people I can this wonderful OVA.

As a fan of obscure 80’s and 90’s OVA this has been one of the worst I’ve seen in a very long time. It commits the worst sin of any anime, just being boring. It’s so boring it was to the point where I was watching this on 1.5X just to make the pain end sooner.
REVIEW OF PLOT: Plot? What plot? Basically this feels like a copy and paste job. Average Japanese High School Girl gets transported to another world where she has mystical powers. Then at the end she’s magically at home again! But they made a bland setup even more boring. The setting
...
is literally a barren wasteland with no life, no atmosphere, WOW it couldn’t be more boring. Characters??? Yeah they don’t exist and I can’t remember any of their names. There’s the girl, a mysterious guy who she likes, an old witch, and demons because it wouldn’t be an awful anime without demons. Girl eventually meets up with some allies, she uses her powers, they defeat the demons, and then everything just ends. The problem with having characters with absolutely no personalities is I’m not given any reason to care. Girl doesn’t even treat that being sent to another world is a big deal, maybe because she knows just as well as we do that this story is going to be super predictable. I understand it’s only an hour long but lots of other OVA’s are able to establish likable characters, and conflicts right away. What’s laughable is that immediately at the beginning and end you’re hit with a wall text containing all the exposition, like why can’t they explain that in the actual anime?
REVIEW OF ART: It’s okay, but it’s uninspired and none of the characters stand out. Even for an 80’s anime the characters don’t have much detail. It’s boring like the rest of the show. The scenery is fine given with the setting they had to work with but it just makes every frame boring to look at.
CONCLUSION: Overall watching this was an absolute waste of time. DO NOT RECOMMEND. There’s absolutely nothing salvageable here. It’s not even in the category so bad it’s good, it’s just simply bad in everyway. Boring plot, boring characters, and boring art combine into an absolute trainwreck of an OVA. Just the fact that this is 58 minutes long is insulting.

To start off this is what I consider a waste of potential.
Main Synopsis: This is based off another “extremely popular” manga lasting a whopping two volumes however, this hentai is only based off of the first volume. Tentacle monsters have come from the future to have suck girl’s blood and while they do that they love to suck blood from the vagina, because doing it from the neck would be too practical. In the beginning everything is going normal. Narita is your average perverted Japanese student. He loves to take peaks at girls especially at their boobs, his childhood friend is a girl called Iijima,
...
she’s against his perversion but we all know she secretly wants him. All hell goes lose when a girl from the drama club goes missing. At drama rehearsal it is revealed that Narita has a big crush on a girl named Saotome who has also gone missing. Then everyone here’s a scream coming from done the hall, what happens next is the girl gets… I have no idea how to explain this, sucked dry by a tentacle monster. After she’s discovered by the drama club Iijima has a feeling what’s going on. Through some investigation skills Narita and Iijima find out who’s ultimately responsible for this. The main driving force for Narita and Iijima is to find all the missing girls.
REVIEW OF THE PLOT: The plot is pretty simple to understand, it’s well written but, some things are a little hard to believe. The part that strikes me as the most extreme is why are the repilnoids here? It’s never explained, Iijima just says she’s from the future and I’m supposed to believe that without any exposition? Another flaw I find with this plot is why don’t we learn anything about Saotome? She’s Narita’s crush and that’s kind of a big deal. Other than that I think everything is pretty respectable. Narita is a good character sure, and comes off as weak at first but after a while he became stronger, one big plus to his character is his determination and his intelligence. As for Iijima she’s okay, she’s you’re typical anime girl from a 90’s anime. She doesn’t really stand out to me, she’s likeable but not the type of girl who I find attractive but that’s probably my personal preference. A huge positive of this hentai is how epic it is, I usually hate fighting scenes but here they’re perfect, the music was epic, and the atmosphere was amazing, you really have to see it. The ending is pretty disappointing it’s a cliff hanger with Saotome looking sad who knows what will happen? Maybe I should read the manga. But I have to address the elephant in the room, the sex, if you can call it sex. Now, I’m not a fan of tentacle porn I just find it weird. It honestly has no place in this hentai and definitely holds it back. Fobia is a hentai that could’ve done better as a regular anime.
REVIEW OF THE ART AND ANIMATION
The artwork is pretty good. Not as good as something like Fushigi Yugi but definitely better than most of today’s anime. It has that classic 90’s anime look to it. In terms of the male characters I’d say Narita is pretty hot. In terms of the girls they’re passable. Saotome stands out to me. Iijima is alright too if you’re into shorter hair girls. In terms of animation it’s pretty good everything moves fluently.
CONCLUSION:
Overall, the only people who I can recommend this to are people who are desperate for something new. It’s definitely not bad but it suffers the same like other 90’s hentai’s, it should been an anime, not a porno. I don’t know how anyone can get off to these sex scenes, watching someone die is not attractive…
