GIVE IT TIME!!
While I cannot deny that Boruto has a very slow start, majority of the criticisms it receives are pretty invalid and taken out of context. Most complaints say that Boruto is "slice of life bullshit but with bad characters" or something along these lines, and this is completely untrue. It starts off with some mild slice of life scenes only to portray that Naruto and the old generation have achieved their goals.
Anyhow, I'll mainly consider a handful of things in my review. Those being writing and execution.
The writing is pretty solid. The characters might not be the most lovable right off the
...
bat, but once you really give them a chance they'll grow on you a lot. They're all used to portray the same message of attaining ones' freedom through resolve and hard work which does get repetitive, however, each character has a very unique and nuanced backstory as well as purpose in the Boruto story that makes them somewhat interesting at the very least. The story itself is pretty much a slice of life until the karma seal and related events unfold, and it does take time but it's worth the watch if you have the time. For the story itself, the hook isn't particularly strong, but the foreshadowing is absolutely God Tier. I don't think I've seen foreshadowing on this level in shonen barring Attack on Titan. The main themes in the series again are pretty generic, but they're shown well so it's not too bad. Very realistic, the writing I would say lands it an 8/10. Another thing is the fights are unmatched. No anime you watch will have better fights than Boruto.
Execution is where Boruto series really lacks. As I'm writing this, the anime is due to go on hiatus to improve on the pacing of the series and to improve the animations as well. Anyhow, the art style is very bland and too colorful compared to the story. We'll have gore and other threatening elements, but it LOOKs like a show you'll see on Treehouse as a kid. Animations have their ups and downs. The lows for animation are unholy and practically unwatchable, but the highs are some of the best ever seen in anime history AND the average is pretty solid. Pacing is another MAJOR issue, especially in today's society when other series are seasonal and much faster paced plots. Boruto on the other hand... well, 3 Boruto episodes have the same amount of story-content as 1 episode of any other anime out right now. Execution is about a 4/10.
I personally value the story and writing much more than the execution so my final review is a 7.5/10.
