Ok… where do I start, we’ll let me say off the bat if you like this show I can totally see why, this show does have good characters, story, and art on the surface, but for me… it’s just not my cup of tea. Also keep in mind this is just my opinion, if you like the show great! With that out of the way let’s get onto the review:
Story: The story for me was pretty irritating, although I will say it does follow a traditional mecha storyline; Protagonist’s beats bad guy, then learns about himself and beats a bag guy that is stronger,
...
then finally beats the worst bad guy. For me this is fine if they do it in a way that is impactful and makes you want to see the bad guy beat up and makes you feel like you want to root for the characters but in this case it didn’t. It feels like they were lazy especially in episodes 1-8 when the just threw villans at our protagonist’s. Idk this just kinda was boring and stereotypical to me.
Art and Animation: So starting out for me the animation and character designs rly got me mad because in my eyes I saw just a bunch of little color and line mistakes that I felt did not look professional, but later the show cleaned itself up and eventually I got used to the color scheme and animation. At points the animation and fight scenes go hand in hand perfectly and look really epic, but at times like I said it’s just a lot of repetitive fighting.
Sound: The music actually is pretty nice in this with the intro sounding pretty cool, and the scores during fights going along with the scenes. Overall the music does a good job of conveying the characters emotions and goes really well with the scenes. This is definitely a hallmark of the show.
Characters: The characters are bland at the start for sure and definitely mimic tropes you would see in other Shōnen, Kamina being the energetic, lady’s man, wild protagonist; Simon being the more shy, laid-back, younger brother, side protagonist; And Yoko the attractive, yet deadly, bad girl. All of these characters seem bland and boring but they over time develop into more fleshed out and interesting characters, and the supporting characters over time definitely help out and bring out the good qualities in the main characters. By the time we get to the timeskip, I start to enjoy the characters more.
Overall enjoyment: I will say at first I was very bored with this show and originally was thinking it would definitely get a 3/10 but it surprised me by getting a little bit better, as much as I still had to force myself to watch it to get it off my list I still was not completely turned off by it by the end. Of course it will never be close to my top 10 but it was still a interesting experience to say the least. If you want a show that provides action and sometimes cheesy story-arcs and dialogue this show is definitely for you! If not I would recommend checking out FMAB, that show for me has nothing in common really with this show, but if you are just getting into anime and you want to try out something that will really get you hyped and ready to dive into anime this is the show you want to watch, FMAB is the show I can say wholeheartedly that I am sure you will at least enjoy somewhat if not 100%. In any case I hope you enjoyed the review and it helped you make up your mind on Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann!
