(Spoilers)
I'm writing this as somone whose only watched the anime so bare that in mind cuz I think it's important for what I'm saying.
So the biggest disappointment about this series is the story and how, as an anime only person, the story makes no fucking sense. The 2nd season(Root A) was a completely original series because they wanted to capitalise on the popularity of the original Manga but the Manga was not yet finished so the animation team made up there own story to fill the gap which is why the popular opinion is that it sucked. Skip forward to Tokyo Ghoul:Re and
...
they are back to the original Manga however a HUGE chunk of the story is now missing between the first season, the made up second season and now the third season. So your constantly left with the feeling of what the fuck is going on? Who are these people? Where have the original cast gone? They don't even try to explain this absence of continuity. Not even a summary. And people going 'read the Manga and you'll understand' is not an excuse.
What personally annoyed me the most was how the 'old cast' act around kaneki(Haise). So kaneki has forgotten who he was, Touka etc do turn up a couple times but they seem to have no will to remind kaneki of anything. For those who don't know, what actually happened in the Manga is that Arima won against kaneki and forcefully gave him amnesia. Something all his old buddies knew. So why on earth are none of them trying to get him back!? Why are they fine leaving him in the care of their enemies who are hunting them down? Touka and kaneki were pretty much in love but does she want to help him get his old self back? Nah. Tsukiyama came pretty close to helping him but when Halse actually straight-up asks Tsukiyama to tell him what he used to be like, he bottles it and doesn't say anything. In sure thats to force a bit of drama or something but it's just unrealistic.
Im conclusion I guess I still enjoyed it, but the lapse in story(you HAVE to read the Manga to fully understand what's happening) and the stupid logic forced on to the original cast, ruined it a bit for me.
