I started reading this after watching the anime and thinking "my god, that was one of the most disappointing things i've ever watched, but i really loved the concept... i wonder if the manga is any better..."
well, it was a long and tumultuous journey but it turns out the answer was an astounding yes. while the beginning had its flaws and i struggled to hang out, it was still much better than the anime. the fanservice was really bad in the first few chapters, but once i got past those initial ups and downs, the manga really started getting A LOT better after the second
...
amusement park visit. however, the turning point that astounded me the most was everything after the first hundred chapters. the character, lore, and story development were astounding, it felt like i was reading a completely different series. you can tell the mangaka was learning throughout the entire series.
the sudden change from these faceless, one-dimensional and barely established characters (e.g. asahi's male friends, mikan, and asahi himself for about the first 30-50 chapters, save for some moments) to some of the deepest and most complex character relationships i've seen cannot be stressed enough. i hung onto the manga and the anime because i liked the dynamic between asahi, a guy who can't keep a secret, and shiragami, a vampire, and i'm glad i did. if you're patient enough to cling onto a rocky and mundane beginning, you'll be in for a treat. i climbed up from a 5/10 to a 9/10 by the time i finished the series, but i think the series' major turning point can be marked by the introduction of the class president, shirogane. everything after chapter 60 was a pleasant upward slope, and practically every chapter in the triple digits is absolutely outstanding.
the final 30-50 chapters were some of the most topsy-turvy and emotionally stimulating parts of the series, and it makes you really glad you stuck through the bland, fan service-y nature of the manga's beginning. it had a flawless conclusion and deeply connects the reader to the characters, and i really wish it had this deeper, sentimental writing from the very beginning, especially with the writing for oka, mikan, and sakurada.
while i don't know if i can recommend this series to anyone in specific, i do know that i'm gonna remember it and that i absolutely loved it. it has its flaws, but i can guarantee that the patience at the beginning is worth it. of course, the first chapters have their highlights as well (such as shiragami's stories at the pool and at the amusement park), i can't deny that it took a lot of patience to get to the good parts. once again: if you can handle a rough and bland beginning with about 10 or so atrocious, nonconsecutive, and skippable chapters of pure fan service, then you're in for an engaging and deep story once it finally picks up.
9/10, would recommend if it weren't for the ludicrous fan service.

Overall, the series did a fantastic job at bringing back memories from the original, but I don't know if I recommend it to anyone who isn't already familiar with the 80's anime or manga. Its purpose of being a "best hits" is definitely achieved and it's much more tame than the first handful of episodes from the original, but the fast pacing really drags the series down in my opinion. Regardless, it achieved its sole purpose and it was enjoyable to rewatch UY in a new style and with a few new episodes. If you're a fan of the original, you'll probably be a fan

I felt like I was watching the anime the anime character is supposed to watch inside the anime itself to avoid copyright laws.
The overall concept is great, but it's an anime heavily dependent on interesting and unique characters, which becomes a problem when the characters have little to no identifiable traits and are just bland, boring, and cliche. There really isn't anything inherently wrong with this show, it's just your generic romance, and there are some instances where it is above-average in the entertainment department, but they never did anything to flesh out any aspect of the series. Not to mention, the conflict between Gekko
...
and Gelato feels more like "we're gonna spar in public but frame it as hero vs. supervillain so we can do what we want without regard to public safety" rather than an actual fight between good and evil. From the world-building to the characters, there's nothing special about the series and it has very little unique qualities. Desumi is the only character that has notable depth, but that actually becomes a con when you feel the contrast between her and every other character.
The only episode that sticks out is episode 7, which focused on the fact that another member from Gelato knew Desumi when she was a little girl. Because the episode was revolved around Desumi and that member, and the member's writing in this specific episode actually made him feel like a well-rounded character, it was the most entertaining in the series for me. However, you know something is wrong when a show fleshed out characters so poorly that it took 7 episodes to properly introduce one of the protagonist's direct allies and, even after, you still don't remember his name.
Unless you really like watching generic romance animes or are as patient as me and give shows a lot of leeway if you like the concept, I wouldn't recommend this show, but I still have very mixed feelings because its flaw is unoriginality and blandness, not that it's bad.

Not much to say here that wouldn't be a repeat of my review of season 1. However, season 2 is substantially better than season 1 in terms of comedy and even character writing in certain cases. Although most of the main cast is still as shallow and one-dimensional as ever, the characters are slightly more distinguished than in season 1. Furthermore, the characters I previously found annoying no longer bother me as much and the humor is far more effective now.
Overall, if you didn't like season 1, I recommend skipping through it and watching season 2 instead if you're willing to give it another shot.
...
It's certainly an improvement and far more entertaining. However, I still wouldn't confidently recommend this season/series to anybody unless they specifically want to give Komi Can't Communicate a shot; there are better slice of life animes.

I certainly gave this series a lot of leeway because I've heard good things about it and like the art, but I simply cannot rate it higher than "fine" or "good." Emphasis on the period. I'm not one to go on about issues that have already been ranted on relentlessly by people far more passionate than myself, so I'll sum up my two main problems with this anime:
1. The humor is terrible. I get a few chuckles every now and then, but all of the jokes are either cringey or literally make me say "that's just stupid."
2. The only interesting and likable characters are Komi
...
and Tadano. Every other character in this series either annoys me or feels half-baked, except maybe Najimi, who is okay. The bland and irksome nature of almost every side character also ties into the lack of good humor because, as other people have stated, they are one-dimensional and entirely revolve around cheap, flanderizing gags.
What I dislike most about this anime is the fact that I really want to like it solely because of Tadano and Komi, who I consider great and entertaining characters, but the rest of the series is so utterly boring and annoying that I found myself doing homework and chores while watching the anime instead of fully paying attention. In the end, it feels like a crappier version of Sakura-sou no Pet no Kanojo, Urusei Yatsura, or Love is War. And yes, I get that these four animes are different genres, but they do share similarities and parallels.
To be more specific, Sakura-sou no Pet no Kanojo did the "autistic girl who wants to open up more" trope a lot better and, although the light novel is atrocious, the anime is fantastic on its own. On another more arbitrary note, I feel as if Komi Can't Communicate was (inadvertently) trying to copy Urusei Yatsura's "the classmates are obsessed with the girl so they'll behave like backstabbing a**holes" gag but just failed miserably in execution. From the first episode, it felt so weird how everyone was obsessed with this random girl who hasn't even spoken a word, teachers included. I get that I'm nitpicking a literal plot point, but considering that the series itself is more grounded than something like Urusei Yatsura, I felt it was the most unrealistic and stupidest aspect of the entire series, not to mention extremely unfunny.
In the end, I'm still going to finish the series because I do find certain aspects charming, but I likely wouldn't ever recommend it because there are better animes with similar stories, tropes, and genres.
