Angel Beats is an anime that proves that just because the show is girly and lighthearted doesn't mean it can't be epic and enjoyable as well!
The story is pretty good, not the greatest anime story, but this show has some interesting concepts like the whole purgatory that everyone is stuck in where death is non existent, and salvation is the only way to leave this world. Overall it compliments the story well.
The art style is really something to admire, the character designs look really good, I swear I can't stop staring at yuri's eyes because that teal color makes it look like their glowing XD.
And
...
don't even get me started on the animation effects (Angel's Hand Sonic anyone) It's a shame angel beats didn't have more actions scenes where the art really shines. I was rather annoyed though by the fact that there was no animation when someone gets obliterated, the camera just swapped it's angle and they were gone, rather disappointing.
The music might just be one of the best things about this show, After a few episodes I started listening to a bunch of the OST's on youtube, If you like piano you will love it because there is alot of piano in this show, Most notibly the OP which features Angel playing the piano, the OP is pretty good, I like it alot.
The ED on the other hand is rather forgettable unfortunately, It's just not edgy enough unfortunately. Angel Beats features an all women japanese band called girls dead monster based on the real life band of the same name, The said band is used as a diversion for the npcs during the SSS operations, and you hear quite a few of their songs throughout the series, my favorite being the crow song, I was always looking foreward to hearing their songs over the course of the show.
The characters is where the series could use some work, the 3 main characters are otonashi, yuri, and angel, Angel is an ok anti hero to the series, she is passable, Otonashi on the other hand manages to be a very forgettable main protagonist, Despite his desire to help those in need before himself he is seriously lacking anything that really makes him stand out much at all, Yuri is a likable characte, but i can't help but feel like she was underutilized in this series despite being a main character, there were only two episodes that really delved into her character (episodes 2 and 12) And for a good portion of the series she was simply the brigade leader who didn't give the audience enough insight into her thoughts and feelings, episode 12 did remedy this quite a bit though, too bad the series was only 13 episodes long, i honestly feel like this was the biggest problem to the series, the beginning was solid, and the ending was really powerful and heart warming, but the middle could have used more substance, I think it would have fared better with 26 episodes, they could have expanded the story and given more time and character development to other characters, that's right, yuri isn't the only character who could have used more development, nearly all the club members have no character development with a few exceptions (Hinata, Naoi, Yui, ect)
Overall I really enjoyed this anime, I never got addicted to it but it was great and i am glad i watched it, the show has it's share of humor as most anime do, many of the secondary characters while being static characters do have there own running gags and character gimmicks that provide some humor, Yui is really hyperactive, Noda is obsessed with his halberd and fighting people, Hinata keeps calling Otonashi gay, TK is always doing some crazy dancing, and Shiina has an obsession with cute things, and there are some others i didn't list, This anime really does have some powerful and heart warming moments in it, and their are some good plot twists, though all the same their are a few things that are never explained, like Naoi's hypnotism powers, or what exactly happens to someone after they are obliterated, As well a certain gaping plot hole in the last episode.
My final verdict? I give Angel Beats an 6/10
