If you're a fan of all the American 80s action movie cheese that checked every box on the stereotypes of those movies at the time, this is the anime for you.
Or if you just came around for the art and its aesthetic.
Everything about this anime made me feel like I was watching some b-movie from my dad's collection, albeit not in English without all the slang. Aliens, car chases, Coca Cola, California, hot rods, the fashion, it checks all the boxes for me.
The story and characters are very flat and lacking. There isn't really anything spectacular about this anime outside of it being

Majo demo Steady

What. The. F***.
I'm quite sure that's the most rational reaction to Majo Demo Steady, but it's such a good example of 'so bad it's good'. For the life of me, I cannot even begin to describe anything about the plot. There are some extremely outdated 80s homophobic stereotypes about one character that made me roll my eyes, but other than that the rest of the anime felt like an intense fever dream that always seemed to completely subvert my expectations but in a "WTF" way. Art is cute at least, even when everything goes off the rails. There's one scene though that has a heavy amount of ... Jun 14, 2022

Dude if I could have half the flair this boy has, I'd be living the good life.
Lupin may have walked so Kaito could run, but man is this boy RUNNING. It's no wonder he's become one of the most popular characters in the Detective Conan universe. This set of OVAs covers different chapters in the Magic Kaito manga with some pretty spectacular animation at certain times. There's at least one scene that always sticks with me as one of the best instances of overchoreography done right. Some minor details may be changed from the manga, but it usually gives the plot some more pizazz or ... Jun 14, 2022

NOTE: This anime is a promotion for an arcade game in Japan, whereas the beginning of the first arc in the anime is in the national port SDBH: World Mission.
Maybe things would probably be better if they didn't try to condense so much into a 9-minute episode. As someone who somehow unwittingly came to love this as a guilty pleasure, I always have 3 words for those new to its existence: READ THE MANGA. While the manga is shallow in its own right and Yoshitaka Nagayama's art in the first two manga sagas is not very appealing to others, it does cover more of the ... Jun 14, 2022
Plastic Little

Ah, Satoshi Urushihara, we meet again.
Despite having never peeped the source material, I found myself enjoying Plastic Little in a sort of guilty-pleasure sort of way while knowing the story and pacing were messy with how much they were trying to fit into one OVA. It's a simple-ish story though and I managed to follow most of it. Per Urushihara's style, of course, there's fanservice but I feel like I would have enjoyed it if it like, wasn't two underage girls lmao. Aside from that, the art is pretty and the style really appeals to me. I feel like if it came out today the femboy ... Jun 14, 2022
Perhaps it was dumb for me to watch this without the context of the manga, but I'm so used to being able to watch something without reading the manga that this just put me off, to be honest.
It feels like they tried to fit some sort of exposition in at the beginning of the OVA but I found myself quickly lost and bored. Some scenes cut so suddenly and weirdly that I became confused and had no idea what was happening anymore. While the mystery aspect of the plot is nice, there are various things and points I found myself laughing at in how ... Jun 14, 2022
Hey there! Are you a bored dweeb that scrolls through retro anime OVAs that rank as well as b-movies as I do? Then chances are you've run across this title.
At first glance, it seems like your run-of-the-mill fantasy, so I thought I was about to watch some mediocre fantasy that you could mistake for any other. Though I suppose I was foolish in that with me being someone who likes Satoshi Urushihara's artstyle, but not his way of inserting fanservice so much. Like I'm fine with fanservice, his insertion of it so far just sucks. Though, big warning, don't go in blind like I did if ... |
