Wow! Darling in the FranXX is really...not good.

18 episodes in and I feel like I've already seen enough. Every episode is essentially formed in the same shallow structure: Hiro and friends are having fun until, uh-oh!, something goes wrong. And the obligatory, contrived plot device is introduced to hold your attention through it all.

I know the show wanted to be the modern messenger of Evangelion's heart and soul, but the haphazard storytelling and lifeless characters were reminiscent of something closer to...Code Geass. Meaning, the show pulls its audience along a winding mess of a misadventure while completely forgetting to build upon the developments of past ... episodes. Every character is a generic archetype you've probably seen before and it's not subtle about it either. When the show thinks it's done something clever, it's sure to toss it in your face in a way that screams, "Look at me, my dense audience! I'm interesting!". Unfortunately, this only causes more convolution with every attempt and, is frankly (Franxxly?) insulting.

But I guess it's not all bad. I mean, Zero Two's character design is pretty darn cool, right?

TL;DR -- If you thought Geass was good, you'll really love this.
