Wooow i can't believe THE Touhou anime hase finally been added to mal, i'm really REALLY happy for it, i'll try to make a good review z this is my first one so sorry uf it comes out like a mess.
let's just start by saying that the animation quality and designs are GODLY, TOP TIER, imo the best designs that Touhou characters have and also the animation quality itself is beyond great, it's really hard to believe that this is an independent project (a freaking fanime), seriously there are mainstream anime that don't look nearly as good as this, it's a 10/10 easily in that
...
regard.
But now let's go to the other important stuff and that is the writing, first off i want to clarify that your opinion of this anime will vary depending on:
-if you are a longtime Touhou
-If you are someone who want to get into Touhou but wants something accessible (or straight up doesn't know it's a videogame franchise)
-if you don't know what Touhou even is and just want to see fun action/comedy anime
Right out of the gate if you fit into the second and first criteria you will LOVE this, the characters are written in a simple yet effective way, just a couple of seconds with them is enough to completely know their personalities, powers and goal, the best compliment i can give to it is that they feel like actual characters, not generic waifus, real badass and funny characters that just happen to be female (if only more anime would learn to do this...), This characterization is lifted from the games themselves the characters really are that cool there too.....but the fanservice isn't mind you, that is explicitly just added here and that would be my biggest complain of the anime, it gives a false impresion of what Touhou is (in that regard at least), since the official franchise is completely fanservice free,the girsl are threated with respect in the cankn works (which is again, rare in the action anime genre)
Now the plot is when it gets interesting, this isn't an official Touhou product, just something made by fans for fans, yet the whole thing can be summarized as a rushes adaptation of the games, its done fantastically ut it is just that and the only way to properly summarize it is: a (yokai) monster girl wants to spread chaos in Gensokyo so is up to Marisa the witch and Reimu the shrine maiden to stop them, it's all sprraded into arcs so it doesn't feel as nearly as repetitive as it sounds, and each episode has their own unique events and twist that makes them engaging and fun.
And that is the keyword for this anime: FUN it is a fun action anime made with love and passion from people who love the Touhou franchise and it is done in a way that can be enyojed by both fans and non fans, it also serves as the perfect introduction for people to the franchise, sure there are some wrong ideas here (again, there's no Fanservice in the actual Touhou games and manga, and some characters personalities are exagerated or straight up misinterpreted), but the gist of it is there, so if you want to see badass girl kicking ass and hanging around you HAVE to WATCH THIS 100% recommended
