Surprised this hasn't been recommended yet. Although School Rumble doesn't involve a main character being an "otaku", it focuses primarily on the romance aspect - like this show does. I'm recommending this coming fresh off of watching this show and somehow it struck me, that I enjoyed this anime in the same ways I enjoyed School Rumble: it knew that people wanted to see romance throughout the series, and, by-and-large, it delivers fabulously.
