Koukaku no Regios

"Chrome Shelled Regios" and "Zero no Tsukaima" have several similar elements. Both have a male lead with several female co-leads. Both are set in a fantastical world combined with a school setting. Both have jokes about violence being dealt to the baka male lead by a romantically frustrated female (although Felli is a far more complex Tsundere than the typical modern version- very interesting character development). Both anime suffer from serious flaws mixed with strengths, and are poor adaptations of light novels that have a superior story. The major difference is that while "Zero no Tsukaima" degrades by sliding off into fanservice and ecchi jokes, "Chrome Shelled Regios" degrades by sliding off into a confusing mismash of symbolism and action that hints at meaning but fails to deliver. Depending on your opinion about the relative detraction of those flaws, you might find the other worth checking out.

Similar to "Maison Ikkoku", "Cross Game" is a gentle romance that explores many of the same themes about the death of a loved one. While Cross Game is set in highschool instead of the college years, human interactions and romance are dealt with as serious subject matter (despite all the humor of life thrown in).
