I will get straight into this, on the surface Bakemonogatari might be a wierd fanservice infested harem and it is true and its a wierd show as you need to be a hardcore otaku like me to get invested into it and its hard to recommend it as a gateway anime as it satirizes a lot of tropes most people arent familiar with and it has a lot of complex themes interwoven with panty shots to lock horny teens eyes on the screen I mean Kanbaru is basically a walking boner generator even though Senjougahara (best girl and my number one waifu) is

my favorite which i will explain why later.
Story-the premise revolves around a half vampire half human hybrid highschooler Araragi who encounters various girls with supernatural ailments as a result of past trauma, personal flaws and psychological issues and Araragi with the help of someone experienced in apparitions helps solve these problems each arc focuses on different girls
and each arc tells a different story and interestingly for a light novel adaptation it uses a lot of dialogue as more characters spend their time talking and while it might be boring which is why you have to be in a particular mood to watch it I mean this show made me sleep more than 10 times the dialogue is funny, snarky and witty and the frequent text screens which moves at 0.1 seconds time frame helps keeps me glued to the screen helped by frequent cuts to snap me out of my spacing out also the panty shots, nudity, sexualized imagery in general held my attention whenever I was bored with the dialogue that and the frequent banter between Senjougahara and Araragi the story is also structured in a linear narrative with a natural flow from point a to point b with no illogical contradictions and deus ex machinas were too predictable for me to criticize which I appreciate and even if the explanations for the curses seems incomplete it is thematically relevant to keep suspension of disbelief so I give it an 8.
Art- the art is
basically one of the most unique art styles I have experience due to its abstract minimalistic aura helped by the occasional change in art styles and the hyperbolic settings I swear the classrooms were around 40 metres long and I really liked the use of real life imagery, and use of symbolism in various scenes helped by the backgrounds having this specific look which creates a sense of isolation as only the important characters are designed and most of the background is empty of people and the color gradients helped set the mood for the scene usually it seems yellowish at day time but when its dark is whitish well at least thats how I remember it also credits to the character designs as it serves as a visual metaphor for each characters Hanekawa has the glasses and big breasts to give the meganekko ,studious class rep appeal ,Hachikuji with her huge bag created a moe effect since she is a loli,Kanbaru has short hair and toned body to give the tomboy impression,Nadeko had fringes and a cap covering her eyes to give shy childhood friend vibes even Araragi gave the impression of a cool attractive vampire with long emo bangs despite having an average built helping us to self insert into him but the best design is of course to my girl Senjougahara I mean she has purple hair which complements her mostly purple school uniform and she has other cute outfits as well but I might go on a tangent so I will stop analysing but her well proportioned body with stationary which can be used for harmful purposes gives the impression of a tough cool eyed exterior as this strong front is used to guard her vulnerablity behind the sharp eyes due to the weak looking body which can easily be carried also the openings are visually unique and pleasing with loads of symbolistic metaphors also the occasional fights seems straight out of a shonen and its very fluid and gory scenes are ridiculous yet fits the exagerrated setting,10.
Character- I really enjoyed the character interactions between each character as it sells on the chemistry in the relationship they have whether it be friends or lovers and while Araragi only gets focus on certain arcs due to his white knight selfless nature and he might be a perverted pedophilic cheating scumbag but him being a loner with snark helped redeeming him even if he cant stop molesting underaged girls , each character seems to be archetypes but they are actually complex due to the apparitions being metaphors for reallife symptoms the show doesnt focus on it but it is the underlying implication and its subtlety helped me recontextualize this show in a positive light as each character goes through development after coming to terms with their conditions except few which is saved for later seasons the noteworthy one is the self procalimed tsundere Senjougahara as her trauma is actually realistic and it makes sense why she acts the way she acts her clingy jealousy is just her trying to latch on to emotional attachment and she isnt a typical tsundere and I like tsunderes all in all i love Senjougahara,Kanbaru has a cool personality and she might be a perverted lesbian but I can ignore that as her issues is somewhat relatable as I used to have a creepy possessive streak once,Nadeko is actually the most relatable as she is usually quiet and reserved and it reminded me of my highschool self and she has the best opening I mean its renai circulation also the VA is excellent, last but not least is Hanekawa who seemed to out of left field but her issues is focused in later seasons despite her idealogy "I dont know everything I know what I know" being fucking relatable now these arent spoilers though so dont attack me but I give this section a 10.
Sound- I really love the soundtrack as it gives this lowkey urban fantasy vibe and it sounds very non japanese at times and the openings are amazing in their soundtracks Renai Circulation the meme opening is my fav but not just for the meme but also for Kana Hanazawa's voice the trumpets and the instrumental rhythm the soundtracks fitted the atmosphere of the particular scenario displayed despite me not being emotionally invested or thinking too much about the show I can appreciate it so I give it a 9.
Enjoyment- i dont enjoy dialogue much as I get bored easily and I sometimes just watched the animation, fights and forgot what the hell was going on that I had to frequently replay scenes however I enjoyed the witty meanings, themes and the beautiful art style as well as the fact that this show makes me want to rewatch the entire monogatari franchise to better understand it and emotionally invest myself and think and try to analyze everything which I now have time for and for this reason along with the other reasons I can safely say that I enjoyed the show to a 10.
Conclusion-this score is very subjective however never have I ever non hesitatingly given a show a ten out of ten with the first few seconds being a panty shot ,this show is recommended only to people who have watched niche anime which basically involves non mainstream highschool romcom ecchi harems so as to understand the referential humor to the tropes also doraemon references are there but it wasnt a problem to me as i used to involuntarily watch it as a kid however this show is a masterpiece of art imo and if you are into supernatural elements and japanese folklore involving runes, curses, spirits and charms then this show is for you if you cant stand loli fanservice, pedophiliac undertones and sexualized scenes then stay away from this show like the plague to sum up this show is enjoyable and one of my favorite anime which I have a hard time recommending despite my praises for this show. But I will still give this show an overall 10 out of 10

Death note is one of the first shows to draw me into the medium and turn me into who I am today and despite knowing the conclusions beforehand due to being spoiled the way everything plays out is what intrigues me and despite being old it still holds up to be a good gateway anime with only 37 episodes
This review is biased merely due to it being my first show and after re-watching some scenes and reviews I can now acknowledge the flaws which I overlooked Story-The premise of Death note is basically about a genius highschooler Light Yagami who finds a notebook belonging ... |
