I didn't watch "Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari" when it was an "on going", and I'm pretty glad I never did it later. Being some kind of an "elitist" I would have never watched something so mainstream, which kept me away from spoilers, and helped me a lot these days.
The short is:
It was a great emotional experience, that not so many shows can grant you. Even though having some serious drawbacks, that can turn some people off, I recommend this one. Or not. Give it a try yourself.
The long is:
Lets start with some context. I had been hating Isekai anime for quite significant time
...
already, as I had been harems too. Watching some simple yet enjoyable predictable slice of life stories or stories that I know nothing about and have no expectations was my entertainment since I got back to watching anime. You know, you don't expect anything, you never get disappointed. But two days I ago I saw a fragment of the first episode, that made me almost immediately going strait to it. Yeah, that one with rape accusation.
Alright, strong things about the show:
Emotions
This is the best part about it. This show kept me anxious all the way to end. I couldn't sleep properly, I couldn't eat. The only thing that bothered me these two days was the show, would happen next, and how would characters overcome challenges that new day throws at them. This anime exploits the feeling of betrayal, hatred, injustice, desperation and anticipation of bad outcome. The story develops mostly through acts on emotions rather than on logical thinking. And this will be covered as a drawback at cons section, but for now.. Lets omit it. You mostly believe it, and that's all that was needed.
Visual
Probably not the most stunning picture on the market, but still a decent looking art that brings joy to your eyes. Fighting scenes are pretty good too, I have something to compare to.
Sound and music
I am very picky when it comes to this, but this show has surprisingly good sound design. Never regret I started to watch it in good headphones straight away. But openings... I am especially picky for those. My list of openings that I enjoyed hardly spans twenty songs, and it doesn't include any from Tate no Yuusha.
Little to no cringe and ecchi moments
A am dead serious about it. Cringe is a part and parcel of slice of life anime, luckily I finally escaped its curse and watched something decent.
So, what turns off
Storytelling
Not necessarily bad, it was sometimes too slow, sometimes too fast. Though having a more or less solid understanding of what was going on in the end, it makes you question not only actions of characters, but also your life choices. Weak motives, characters changing their judgement every now and then, few moments of braking narrative set from the beginning. Emotionally you believe the story, but not always - logically. Remember I mentioned development of the plot based on emotional thinking? That's where it hits. By the way, being a 20 y.o. guy placed in harsh environment and under so much pressure will make anyone act on emotions, rather than on logic.
Slavery theme
No words needed here. You have problems with this theme - do not watch.
Finally, yes, it is an ordinary isekai harem with lolis that are ready to die for protagonist just because. But it has it, it has that special something that makes it different some way. It even made me write a review, for the first time in -oh god- five years of my anime experience.
Watch shows that you enjoy, understand why you enjoy them, and grow mentally, brothers.
