Code Geass: Boukoku no Akito 1 - Yokuryuu wa Maiorita (Anime) add

'Code Geass'. You don't need anything more to get me fired up. I loved CG series it easily became one of my favorite titles. Story of Lelouch was perfect for me. It had everything I needed. Of course I was happy when I heard of Boukoku no Akito but on the other side what else Sunrise can provide to make me even more hyped?

Well it is not R1 or R2 that's for sure. But I instantly felt this is the world showed in this series. However we visit Europe not Japan. Action still evolves around guy from Area 11 - Akito. We get nice preview ... of his character, we can guess he is possessed by the Geass. But as the introduction go we can't get everything at once. And it is made in great way - you want to know what is wrong with this main character.
Second main character - Leila Malcal is also intriguing. We get a little of her background and also of her capabilities as military officer. Seems smart, seems being able to handle difficult situations. And she is caring for Elevens.

And here we come at great thing about this spinoff. While watching Hangyaku no Lelouch I believed that EU is fighting Britannia for the free world. And Boukoku no Akito shows as they indeed are fightining Britannia but they are no better than Brits. Japanese can't hope for refuge in EU, they get locked in ghettos. And they use them as cannon fodder and main frontline force. Why? Because they value is way lower than value of European's life.
The unit of Elevens is called Wyvern and noone sees problem with equipping their mechs with explosives. Noone but Leila who eventually takes over command however too late to save soldiers. There is only lone survivor - Akito.

As story is interesting and quite clear characters didn't get too much development. They are not as charismatic as the Hangyaku's cast. But that was only first movie so introduction was well done. We got quite high amount of them but is obvious only part of them will get more highlight. I rated characters high, maybe a little overrated it but it is my review so I can do it! ;)

Art and sound. Animation is great. Knightmares are beautiful, there is more variety to them and fighting scenes are well done. I felt like this machinery really smashed into another one. Characters were drawn with care, I didn't spotted any oddities. And voice acting is again very good. As well as soundtrack. Especially ending song. I felt in love with it instantly!

To sum up I realize this anime is not perfect. But it got this feeling of Code Geass it is great promise of better movies following this one.

I could wrap up this review in one sentence: 'what did you do to poor Phoenix?!' Okay one more: 'this anime was terribad'!

I guess it's not easy to do decent anime based on two games. Games that takes about 65 hours to beat them. But on the other side I loved Persona 4 anime, and to beat game you need over 100 hours.

I will start with acceptable things (don't confuse them with good!). Animation was goo... decent. Sometimes I wanted to pluck my eyes off but well Maya looked nice. If we would change Franziska's lips I believe it would fix her weird looks too. ... And hmmm characters looked kinda like the ones in game. But all the time I had feeling that they are weird and creepy! Bodies looked awkward. Dunno maybe it is me.

So let's look at Voice Actors. They did decent job but I just didn't like Phoenix's voice. Same goes for more characters. But that is just my opinion as you know in game we could hear only few words 'objection' and 'hold it'. But that was the thing that made Phoenix Wright the game awesome. It fit in this game style and I really always was feeling like shouting with him while pointing my finger like idiot at my console.

What else made the games so good? Soundtrack. Making you feel the mood. And we can hear poor versions of them in anime. And it is not even used properly! Yes they messed it up! While in game you felt fired up with 'cross-examination theme' in anime... eh I guess they used it somewhere? Music was building suspense but anime didn't provide it at all. Etcetera etcetera.

And you know what? That was the 'not worst part of anime'. Really!
Story. They showed sketch of intriguing and sucking in stories. And in anime we couldn't feel it at all. Shortened into absolute minimum, skipping factors that made the twists work so well left us with pile of s... ah no swearing. Sorry but I really was pissed off when I watched this and saw what they did to plot. Where was the investigation that made us think 'what the hell really happened here'. Where were some barely visible clues? Skipped!
Instead of dialogue that built the plot we got exposition! To be honest it reminded me of reading the checklist. 1. Phoenix talks to cop, 2. Phoenix finds out something (skip it, we will show it in point 4 or 5). You get the idea.

You still don't believe it was terrible experience watching this anime? Okay so let's look at characters. We don't get any development! For example my least favorite one: Larry Butz. It is hard to say if he has any personality. At the beginning we see Phoenix save him in the court, we get a little, tiny piece of explanation that he is quite immature guy. While in game we got his goofy character clearly showed to us here even that didn't work.
Also how usually we develop characters? Through story. And while story was bad you know what that mean. Next example: Miles Edgeworth. The DL-6 Case was his nightmare and we saved him, we 'killed' that nightmare. In anime it is barely mentioned! And we don't get how he hurt Phoenix when he ran away. Ah wait we got information about this in one of the last episodes! No build up for his come back, no nothing. And I could talk about this for hours writing way more but it's waste of time.

And watching it was waste of time! Do not watch this until you are really bored or want to see something very very very bad!

Story: 2/10 (not 1/10 because at least they showed all cases)

Character: 1/10
Enjoyment: 2/10

I have to admit. When I discovered this anime not long ago I didn't expect anything amazing. I turned it on and I get this warning about characters being delinquents. Starts nice. Next I get awesome opening. I love it! But the very first scene is what made me felt for this anime. Seriously I didn't expect some random guy eating dropped pencil. It sounds stupid, it is stupid but it made me laugh so hard. And from now on most the time I enjoyed this title sooooo hard!

Story: each episode covers different story, sometimes episodes are vaguely connected but that is strength of this ...

Mixed Feelings

Children who have been evacuated to a cold sleep facility during the invasion by the "unknown" several decades ago wake up from their slumber and learn that their bodies developed some supernatural forces. In order to protect the country from the "unknown" emerging from the Tokyo bay gate, the boys and girls wage battles in the defense the cities of Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Chiba.

Well introduction to the story sounds pretty standard. Children with super powers fighting monsters while adults are cheering them up from the safe spots. But as we learned in anime that is not a bad thing. Stories based on that cliche can ... be amazing and entertaining.
And at the beginning QC does not look bad. It has world with not that many plot holes.
We meet world with three cities or rather three schools that defend their world. HOWEVER these schools does not matter. Only difference between them is how their uniforms look like. And fact that in one school students fly on brooms, second has swordsman type fighters and last one is for marksmen. But that doesn't matter, students are just background for the few main characters and it is very poor background.
We meet the world with ranking system which was never fully explained. Of course we instantly know that it is based on combat strength of students. It was opportunity to show some struggle going up, rivalry between students. But nope, instead we get... well nothing. One guy who is proud of being #4 and that's all. One guy who is below top 200 and he doesn't care. Awesome use it, show how strong he is despite his low rank. Nope nothing. We met probably two strongest students but that does not matter at all.

The plot is not complicated and after at most 3 eps you will be expecting the twist. Don't get me wrong. Story is written quite nicely, it is interesting and what is most important - I enjoyed it despite being so straight. I wasn't overjoyed with it but it was decent.
Powers called 'worlds' seemed to be important to the plot. I admit idea of gaining one as the result of dreams is not bad. Child dream about world, gain power based on that world (probably, they never explain it properly) and get supernatural ability called 'world'. And that's all. They are not interesting. Girl unleashing power with her sword made one or two big 'booms', boy controlling gravity never used it in interesting way. Sniper and her sister who is gunner showed few interesting actions but to be fair we never grasped how this marksman's ability worked at all.

But characters. They were very POORLY designed. I just finished this anime and I can't remember single character's name. But let's give main cast at least some thought and why they were... not the worst but not good either.
Chigusa siblings - awkward brother and sister with bond that you will feel while watching them interact. But also I felt very awkward watching them. And I loved Ore no Imouto so I believe I can even accept anime when you put line 'incest ftw'. Their social awkwardness and weird interaction between them was both interesting and creepy. I guess Kasumi was meant to be the smart guy in this anime as well as caring guy who shows it being asshole but it didn't go well. He was just... creepy.
Ichiya Suzaku aka #4. At start he is guy who is full of himself and believes that he can handle everything alone. Of course we discover he acts that way so he can protect the girl he loves (what a shocker!). And he starts to change into a little bit more cooperative guy (and more tsundere guy yack!) after accident. Then we see him go berserk after he loses the reason to live, which is understandable but it is again not showed properly so we can't feel bad for him. Instead he was at the beginning annoying asshole, then annoying wimp. Of course he was written to be opposite to Kasumi but that didn't work well.
His supposed reason for living and fighting wasn't written better at all. Canaria Utara has little to no personality and quirk of being a slouch (is this proper word? the moments when I feel my english sux ;) ).
Maihime Tanekawa was the #1 student who also believed in protecting everybody. Great she didn't left any impression on me!
And last but not least Hotaru who was Maihime's friend and something like her guardian angel. They tried to show how strong their bond was but I just couldn't feel it. It was obvious what author intended to write but he did poor job.

But side characters do not add poor impression. Why? There is almost no supporting cast. Few guys even more forgettable.

Art and sound seems fine. Wasn't great, but ok. Few nice songs, decent graphics, fights wasn't impressive but didn't look terrible too.

Bottom line it is not bad anime it won't make you bleed from eyes or ears but if you don't have much time I suggest to skip that one. You wont miss anything at all. I bet in two weeks I will forget about it.
