Cute girls doing cute things! A standard moe trope—oh wait… 💀 These manga with mostly cute female leads are not what you'd expect them to be! Both of these delve into darker themes that make you question why these cute girls have to endure this kind of pain/trauma. "Gakkougurashi!" tapped into using a coping mechanism that is just a string away from backfiring—a happy delusion—in order to help them cling to that hope that everything will be okay despite their circumstances. On the other hand, "I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day" delves into the sad reality of being unable to die together with all the pain you have to endure because of it. It also tapped into wanting to leave a mark on the ones you love before your inevitable end, as life is fragile, and it can be taken away at the drop of a hat. All in all, if you want a moe manga that has an element of slice of life together with some form of darker themes, then these two are for you.

If you want an anime in which the opening doesn't line up with the actual tone of the show, then these anime are for you! Trust me, it's not as wholesome as the opening might want you to think it will be. Both anime delve into deeper subjects of reality in a what-if scenario, one questioning if it is really fair to judge people by their actions when that action is only done because it's a do-or-die scenario, and the other tapping into using happy delusions to cope with the harsh reality that one lives in. Both anime really hit hard near their last few episodes and ended in a way that made the viewers think of what the continuation of these series might be.
