Tokyo Ghoul:re 2nd Season (Anime) add

Oh boy, where do I begin with this piece.

I don't typically write reviews for anime I watch, but once I finished this series, I knew I couldn't stay silent from this very "special" season.

The plot is one of the biggest turn offs of the season for any viewer to endure. No rhyme or rhythm, just plain mediocrity at every turn. Without spoiling anything, let me just say that you think the show is going one direction, but then it scraps that direction and aims for numerous others while not even trying to make itself seem organized in the process. The story is simultaneously ... aimed at different directions, causing me to feel disoriented and perplexed at what the plot aims to achieve. Its underlying message is quite cheap and generic as well. Themes of identity and redemption are watered down to inexcusable forms of purpose that the show intended to convey, few would probably even understand what they plot is trying to say with the disorganization that unfolds.

Furthermore, pretty much all of the characters are quite generic and not very likeable to the viewer. I certainly didn't care if a character I barely remembered died along the way, little effort was placed in demonstrating true emotion that would genuinely connect the viewer with the characters. And boy are there a lot of characters that are quite forgettable. I never even bothered to memorize any of their names because in the end, they played their small roles and it somehow turned out in favor of the victors of the story. No show or series that I have watched so far has done this bad of a job at trying to make their main characters even likeable. TG just leaves them up to the viewers to try to attach some subjective meaning to the characters in an unorganized plot. The show essentially creates a character vs. plot battle rather than focusing on the actual battles of the show, which aren't all that good either.

I almost dropped the series entirely by the end of the second season of TG, but I somehow managed to convince myself to see how unorganized and unfulfilling anime could be. I haven't read the manga, so my review stands as an anime only watcher. I recognize that the manga retains many of the parts of the plot that were essential to the story, but the anime itself should have adapted what was important to the show rather than rely on its viewers to source from the manga or other platforms.

Words cannot completely summarize how extremely disappointed I was at this show turned out and I hope no additional seasons are out in the works. It's for the best of everyone that we just lay the anime adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul to rest.

"Do you think you'll be able to forget?"

For what it is, Your Lie in April is a bittersweet love story between two young musicians that benefits from a superb composition of vibrant animation, dramatic story telling, and a remarkable selection of classical music. To say that the show is a masterpiece is confirmed through how these elements of creativity synchronize with each other to present an aesthetically pleasing display of young love, aspirations, and tragedies. While I would agree that the show would be better depicted within a high school setting, the above average intellect of the show's beloved middle school aged characters does not ... take away from the wonderful storytelling that the show portrays itself to be. One cannot easily forget how the use of color in the show brings an almost melodramatic appeal to the story while revealing deeper insights into the moods and perspectives of each character. One cannot easily forget how the art of music in the show reflects each character's worries and desires through a timeless selection of auditory beauty and magnificence. What results is an anime that not only speaks to the heart, but one that impresses itself onto the unconscious minds of viewers.

Each episode maintains a consistent development in the plot that sprinkles within it hints towards what is to come further down the story. The conflict of the story is engaging and keeps the viewer invested in what the next step of each character will be. It is clear that some of the show's characters can seem quite hysterical for unnecessary purposes other than to seek attention, but this effect is often mitigated by the show's constant references to the past. In fact, it is this often heavy reference to the past that really contributes to the maturity of each prominent character. Young childhood memories seem more distant, but at the same time they become more memorable and offers guidance towards each character's future actions. These references to the past may be presented more often than they should be, though that isn't to say that they aren't necessary in the first place. And these memories are also a crucial part to the development of the plot. In order to advance, the protagonists must be willing to overcome them through their own personal talents, most often through music.

For Your Lie in April to be a contemporary classic is a bit of a stretch, but for it to be a timeless masterpiece sufficiently describes the legacy of this evocative show. One could only wish to temporarily forget this show to relive the surprises that await in watching it for the first time. It is anime such as Your Lie in April that helps sustain the legacy of anime as a whole.
