Tower of god after a decade long journey finally gets an anime adaptation, and is all the hype surrounding it really all that great..... Not really!
infact to tell you the truth the anime simply doesn't set the atmosphere correctly. While i enjoyed certain aspects of it, the fact of the matter is they leave out very underlying details and crucial world building elements out of the anime. When you read TOG for the first 100 chapters you instantly know what me or what many others have pointed out here is wrong with the anime.
And that fact is that that the overall tone of the
...
tower is shown as a luxury to climb instead of what it truly is, Which its a privilege! The tower in the manwha is shown and conveyed in such a way that it honestly makes it look like theyre climbing a tower in hell. and just like hell its filled with so many people that set out to abuse, manipulate and exploit anything or anyone. There can be some truly wholesome characters which you will see in S2 if there ever is one. but in the end climbing the tower more and more you see a pattern.
So where to start:
- Artstyle
Overall it was okey. Nothing greatly impressive but also nothing really horrendously bad. Some say it was drawn like this to mimic the manwha but personally i just think the budget was so low they had to conserve time and cut corners in pretty much a good portion of places! fight scenes could have been alot better IMHO but thats just me!
- Soundtrack
This is where i really feel that its let down the anime in so many ways. while i do appreciate the styles of 2 of the soundtracks where they are very rarely ever used. it doesn't set the overall atmosphere of bam or the tower and side characters. A more dark toned mysterious soundtrack would have been alot more appropriate. think vinland saga OST, Deep thundering drums, Mysterious cello's. That but adapted to a future fantasy setting keeping all the key elements. Not only would it potentially set the tone far better but it will convey in such a way the horrifying journey to climb the tower.
And to end on these quick summaries. with how TOG is structured story wise, 13 episodes alone is just simply not enough to set the true atmopshere of TOG. they missed quite alot of details some big and many minor elements which sets up and gives the understanding of whats about to happen. There is a reason why a good majority of people say that its a long read to get into because its chapters on chapters of story that is tied to side characters rather than through the MC. This is how world building is fleshed out throughout the entire story. And they simply cut way to much material for the sake of time and the restrictions they where working with when they got ordered to make it. Perhaps if this was maybe 24 episodes sure it could have potentially been alot better. But in the end the anime from my POV does not do the manwha justice!
And thus overall its why im only giving this a harsh 6.. would be between a 4 and 5 if you ask me but exposure in the end will help boost the fanbase for the manwha. especially considering how long its been out.
