Now the anime sounded good from the synopsis and I had a lot of time on my hands so I gave it a go.
I wish I hadn't.
I have two major problems with this anime. And I mean it when I say MAJOR. First, the characters. Aside from the MC, who himself has one of the worst developments I have ever seen in an anime, there are no major characters. MC's story and sympathizing with him, die in two episodes. All other characters are dumb, stupid, and their actions make no sense at all like why would they start beating the MC in the first few eps? Doesn't make any sense. This was all from the "present-day". The characters of the past are somewhat better. Out of the about 30 students from each class, only about 3-4 get a considerable screentime. The whole anime I kept wondering,"WHERE THE HECK ARE THEIR PARENTS?!" or why the heck is not police involved in this? as if the government thinks "Oh students of an entire class have started to drop like flies and this incident has happened many times in the past, its no big deal, just a game". The response from the government and the police should've been more like in The Parasyte. But the anime makes it feels like the students are stranded on a different planet or something. Its not like this a really complex problem to solve and no one knows the reason behind the text messages, hell a mere 15 year old girl was able to give a theory behind the mysterious deaths that remains to be the only theory closest to the truth so far.
My second major problem was execution and composition. The anime seemed like jumbled thoughts with no rhythm or anything, jumping from the past to the present and vice versa too often that I wasn't able to enjoy either of them. Moreover, the past that we see is actually the MC telling his story to his present friends, like what the heck? They are constantly getting orders and are standing on the edge of death and you are telling them how your previous classmates died? The past should've been in flashbacks or dreams. That would've been a lot better.
Now the colossal problem with the anime is its explanation. Do you know how silly the magician shows sound when you know the tricks behind them? Well when they give us an explanation for the deaths, that is as absurd as it is outrageously stupid. Its like the writers themselves didn't know how to explain the deaths and asked a 10-year old for help. The explanation was so bad that I can't even brush it under the carpet as "Anime Logic".
Another problem with it was that it was way predictable. I could call the deaths of people episodes before they happened.
