I know. 10 out of 10? Really? One Piece? Yeah right.
Here me out. Is the art scaring you away? Some of the more ridiculous aspects of the characters, or plot? (There are a lot of those) The huge length of the series? (621+ episodes at present, 12 movies, 7 specials)
Well let me ask you this, do you like an anime that is filled to the brim with unique characters, a fantastic story, extremely creative ideas, amazing action, hilarious comedy, extremely emotional moments, excellent drama, and wonderful world-building? An anime that is a far cry from other, more generic Shonen affair like Naruto (Dragon Ball Z)
...
and Bleach (Yu Yu Hakusho)? An anime that has been consistently good, no, improved steadily over 14 years (manga's been going 16 years) and just keeps getting even better? If so you'll love One Piece.
Eichiiro Oda has simply created a masterpiece here, One Piece fires on all cylinders and always succeeds. While wrapped up in zaniness (rubber pirates, transforming reindeer, weird powers, weirder designs, oh my!) One Piece has, at it's heart, such lovable, interesting, and unique characters who go on such a long, hard journey full of adventure. Along the way are plenty of heart-rending moments, One Piece is the only anime that's made me cry, and it's done so more than once!
Not one character is the same, and each play off each other really well, to make a good deal of the comedy mentioned earlier. The characters are all very well developed and thought out, they each go through hard struggles as they attempt to bring their dreams and the dreams of their fellow friends to reality. The watcher becomes engrossed and involved with them, pretty soon you'll fall in love.
The fights are incredible, the powers creative. The characters struggling in these conflicts are so interesting, both the Straw Hat Crew themselves, and the enemies they fight, you won't want to leave your seat.
The sense of friendship, adventure, and fun are so contagious, you won't be able to help but smile after a particularly hard fight is done, or a new location is explored. No one location is the same, everywhere the crew visits is unique and interesting.
The art might be off-putting, but I've grown to love it. I'm, sure not everyone will love it like I do, but I've heard of several fans who manage to at least like it a little. Sure it's weird. But it's much less generic looking than Bleach, for example. It adds a charm and a feel to One Piece that is all its own.
The music is incredible. From the epic openings, to the adventurous endings, to the moving background music, this series delivers heavily in the music category. In some of the more emotional scenes the music really helps give that little push that sends a tear or two from my eye. In a scene where a fight is about to begin, tunes like Overtaken get you pumped up for the fight. The music on the high seas make you want to go adventuring with the Straw Hats as a pirate! The openings make you excited for the episode your'e about to watch, and the endings (which they later get rid of to make room for longer openings) make you want to watch the next one. The music goes the extra mile and makes One Piece more complete.
Give it a chance, and you won't be disappointed, not one bit. I never expected One Piece to be my favorite anime, but it certainly has become so.
