This is the first review I've ever written on MAL, and it might very well be my last aswell (no promises there however). At the time of writing this review I have seen all currently aired episodes (5/12).
There seems to be rather high requirements that needs to be met before I bother letting my fingers fly across the keyboard. There's plenty of other shows out there that objectively are better than this one, but where I did not post nor write any reviews. So what is different this time?
This show has caught a lot of attention for things that got nothing to do with the
...
show itself, but situations surrounding the show. I have written on the forums plenty of times about how I feel about MAL "fixing" the score, but I am not here to talk about this. No, we are here about the show.
And let me tell you, the show is pure FUN. The characters has interesting personalities and looks and the cast is impressively big with a lot of reoccuring characters. The situations they sometimes find themselves in makes me laught out loud. The jokes are just about raunchy enough for a show of this nature, but don't let the show fool you, they will manage to sneak in a couple of wholesome moments aswell.
The art looks fairly normal for 2020 standard, which means it looks great. I have yet to notice any clunky animation, it has all seemed smooth for now. The opening and ending might be one of the better ones in the currently airing season, not necessarily because it is the best composed one, but because you can hear the singers are having FUN with the song. The energy and positivity almost radiates through the screen and headphones. A true bop indeed.
I can however see where some of its many controversies come from. It's pushing the limits of what you can put on the screen. The very concept of the show seems ripe for disaster; A bunch of adventurers review prostitutes of different races... What could possibly go wrong? Except for the fact that the show actually preaches body positivity. You feel insecure about certain aspects of your body? Don't worry, there's somebody out there that'll love it!
So yes, why did I write this review when there's better shows out there? Well, I guess it is because I hope that once the dust settles, and 'flexing the world' is but a memory, that we all can enjoy the anime for what it is; A fun adventure through the part of the fantasy world we so rarely see.
