This is the first review i submit on any anime i've ever watched; but i feel obligated to say this, since there is a huge discrepancy in opinion/reviews on TTGL.
On one hand, TTGL received so many awards, been praised for it's 'breakthrough', and it's beautiful ending .. etc etc..
On the other, it's busted as an inflated show, super exaggerated .. with an 'insulting ending'.
I personally started watching this show because i came across Kamina's quote "Don't believe in yourself. Believe in me! Believe in the Kamina who believes in you". It made me wanna watch the show!
While watching, i found it EXTREMELY
...
unrealistic! The way the gunmen appear out of nowhere, how they unrealistically upgrade their gears WITHOUT having any source of manufacturing or even a market to buy bullets and gear from xD i mean .. things exist in this anime out of NOWHERE. (there was this scene where the main characters where starving midway a fight, so their PET ANIMAL CUT OFF A PIECE OF ITS FLESH SO THEY CAN EAT!! WTH)
But in all honesty, these 'unrealistic things' kinda enlightened me to how we put barriers to ourselves; based on our understanding of the limits that surround us. As i watched along, my mind started becoming careless, not bounded by restrictions. So whn a character faces a challenge, i no longer think how screwed they r .. or how unbelievable it is for them to win without the usual shounen spin of 'getting triggered to protect a friend' or 'getting someone to help them power up'. NO. I started automatically thinking ' just believe in ur capacity to overcome this incredibly absurd challenge... and u ALONE CAN DO IT! because why not' !!!
And this is where the GEM is found in this anime. The ability to truly believe in urself even when three is absolutely no REASON to! Usually, all other animes try to tell u the same thing (i.e. Naruto "believe it dattebayo") .. but here it is different. In naruto u could EASILY believe; there were constant signs that give u a reason to do so. But here... it is beyond absurd.. the development of the action makes u think NO WAY IF THEY MAKE IT OUT OF THIS .. THAT WOULD BE UNREALISTIC AND STUPID!
The quote i mentioned up, through the episodes, it developed to this:
“Don’t believe in the you that believes in me and don’t believe in the me that believes in you. Believe in the you that believes in yourself.”
By episode 17, this anime REALLY TAKES OFF THO! I dont want to spoil, but as the plot advances, and the human race starts living in groups; developing a system, rules, faiths, etc... The 'politics' and difference in ideologies between ppl reflects a lot about modern world society. Picking up at this rate, it feels like an absolutely different anime!
TTGL is not sth u can casually recommend to someone. I dont fancy the animation much, the character development isnt sth i personally got attached to (although the plot was surprising and i enjoyed it .. and on multiple occasions i felt SAD .. but shhhh no spoilers!), it's overall average to me (a random person who watched this lol). But it is sth that u choose to watch to break through some of the chains inside ur mind that u r not fully aware of.
So im very very grateful that i watched this, it added sth to me.. so it was worth it!
