Let me start off by saying: this anime is beautiful. It really is. The visuals are so outstanding that it's hard to not want to look at them. All the environments have so much depth and color put into them that you just want to take a still frame from the anime and put it on your wall. And the characters! Another wonderful thing about it was the audio. Beautiful music combined with amazing voice actors; it was incredible! All the music fit perfectly with the situations and helped to pull me in. And the voices of the characters were so well suited it made them feel much more real and honest. In the audio department, I couldn't have asked for more.
The story itself was good, not the most original, but not the least. It was another "zombie apocalypse" story, but with a steampunk twist (and I love steampunk, so it worked out great). They also added other unique and unexpected factors that kept the story interesting and (in my opinion) well worth watching.
Characters usually make or break an anime for me, and luckily the characters in Kabaneri were fun to watch (especially Mumei, she's so cute!). The designs were unique enough and all the characters had decent personalities so it was easy to like them. I had my ups and downs with Ikoma, but ultimately I think he's a great main character. All the characters add something amazing to the anime in my opinion (even Biba, who many people who watch the anime don't understand, and take it out on the anime itself. Sometimes you have to look for deeper meanings and it shows an anime in a whole new light).
Overall, I very much enjoyed this anime. It may not be "the most original" according to some, but it is definitely worth watching in my opinion. Hey, if zombie apocalypse is your thing, this anime is totally for you. Even if it's not, this anime is worth a watch. It has stunning visuals, beautiful audio, and characters who are both fun and have depth. This anime seems to get a bad rep from some people, but I think they may just not understand some of the depth behind it (especially with Biba; if you pay close attention and try to understand him more, the anime will make more sense, and ultimately be more enjoyable for you). In conclusion, give this anime a chance, it truly deserves one.
