The premise of the manga is intriguing and avoids a lot of the embarrassing tropes associated with fantasy manga works; unfortunately, that's all it has going for it and it commits one of the worst crimes a manga could do: be boring.

The hook of exploring an Elf's long lifespan and how it effects her views on life and her relationships with those who are shorter-lived is interesting. Elves usually don't get such introspective and in-depth views. Unfortunately, the manga is excruciatingly slow. Even after having read 99 chapters it feels like not much has happened at all. The plot is also rather standard fantasy fare, ... moving to new places, picking up party members, doing favours, defeating some monsters or villains. And it's not just the plot that is boring the characters are boring as well with little depth or interesting quirks. This is made even worse by the art which struggles to show the character's expressions and emotions and many of them have permanent poker faces which rarely deviate.

The manga is far from awful but it didn't live up to expectations at all in the search for another good fantasy manga.

Blue Lock feels like a survival/death-match manga but with sports instead. The cut throat and betrayal filled process of the "Blue Lock" project, along with the edgy looking mascot drawings representing the players is exactly what'd you see in a survival/death match manga...just without the gore and death.

Unlike most sports manga, Blue Lock emphasizes the selfishness and individuality of the players over teamwork so as to create the strongest striker as all players are competing are strikers. Thus, the majority of the cast are strong headed and aggressive. While it makes sense for the storyline, this unfortunately makes most of the characters unpleasant and insufferable. ... Throughout the whole manga I only ever had two I actually cared for (neither of which were the main character) and even later on I stopped caring about one of them because the nature of the games causes them to grow into another asshole like the rest of the cast. I feel no warmth from the characters or the shallow bonds they form, which in turn grants me no satisfaction when I see them triumph. In fact, I wish to see them fail.

The best thing about this manga is the art but even that often falls prey to overusing "crazy" faces to make the characters look like psychos or silly when they start sticking their tongues out and drooling. I can't take most characters or moments seriously because of this.

While I don't recommend this manga there was still something about it that compelled me to read all of the currently available chapters (although I skimmed a lot of the matches as there was a lot of repetition). So if such a cutthroat manga about sports sounds interesting to you then you may love it.
