This show got a bad rep from westerners when it came out, because it was the 'shit show of the season', it's pretty common that there's a scapegoat every once in a while because people just need something to shit on ala SAO.

The show itself is fine, there's nothing wrong with it, people who try to point that the """incest"""" relationship (not actually incest btw, this was established in the first damn episode) in the show is damnable, clearly don't watch a lot of anime as this is a trope as old as the industry itself. Similarly those that care about the legal 'age ... of consent' for a Japanese cartoon character (You don't actually give a shit don't pretend like you do) are either youtuber bandwagoners or outsider/newcomers to the medium. Now that that's taken care of, let's get down to the review.

It's an adaptation of a light novel series written by the same man that brought us OreImo, heck there's even cameos of the characters. It presents a similar albeit different scenario of an overbearing brother and a geeky sister trying to get along, and later realizing they bear romantic feelings for eachother.
In contrast to OreImo, t focuses more on funny interactions with the characters as supposed to crocodile tears drama. Me likey.
The protag Masamune is a plank of wood that's humorously enough called a 'light novel protagonist' multiple times thoughout the series due to his tendency to magnetically attract girls to him and get into perverted situations with them. The show is self aware to a certain extent and I can appreciate that.

The little sister Sagiri is a shut-in NEET that draws lewd LN illustrations, whether she gets paid for this or not isn't made entirely clear, but I will assume this is the case. Because of her crippling anxiety she never steps outside her bedroom, and thus uses her own body as reference for her lewd illustrations ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Elf is the rival author whose procrastinational habits are worse than a second-year university student, and if Sagiri didn't exist, I'd say she would win the Masamunebowl due to her being seemingly perfect waifu material.

Muramasa is a fellow author and crazy fangirl that will probably have a rape charge in a couple of years. She is the worst girl, only because no proper woman forgoes her underwear when walking around in public.

there are other girls as well, and they mostly serve as more fuel for the harem train.

The plot comes in form of the progressing relationship between the girls and the protag, which is standard fare for these kinds of series.

The ED slaps, I frequently blast it on youtube, but the rest OST itself is fairly forgettable.

Sagiri is cute, Elf best girl. Season 2 never.

haha, this is some funny shit alright, but is there a character that could even possibly EVEN TOUCH Takagi-san? Let alone defeat her. And I’m not talking about schoolgirl Takagi-san. I’m not talking about out-of-school Takagi-san either. Hell, I’m not even talking about in-the-rain-with-an-umbrella out-of-school Takagi-san with the love-eraser of doom and jack-in-the-box (made with only construction paper and fully capable of shooting out of the box and with a rewind feature) im talking about out-of-school in-the-rain on-the-beach Takagi-san with the juice can of indirect-kiss (capable of 'Tu quoque' double rusing her victim), false love-confession of embarrassment, false shoes under the desk and equipped with ... her cowboy hat, a perfect mindfuck teasing plot, control of the eight elements and mind read, with Nishikata's DNA implanted in her so she has perfect hindsight on how to not fuck up her ruse and can perform bike break release walkcycle while being an expert in lying and tomfoolery.

8/10 great stuff but read the manga would ya

Every dude in this show is a girl, every girl is a dude. The whole show is a trap, this curious predicament really makes a man wonder, are traps really gay? is it really so wrong to be attracted to a drawing of a girl that happens to have a bulge between its legs where in reality there should be none? these are questions a man must ask himself, as he watches a show such as Himegoto. Sir William Smith once said "It appears, in fact, from this, as well as from the extant fragments, that the first book of the work contained a general ... account of the origin and arrangement of the universe. The second book appears to have been an exposition of the nature of numbers, which in the Pythagorean theory are the essence and source of all things." this perfectly arranged bundle of words with no meaning, perfectly encapsulates my feelings toward the show, a bundle of things thrown together for laughs, with no real meaning towards them. There is nothing original here, and yet i cannot look away, like a trainwreck is persists my mind and penis, as i sit here confused wondering whether its really ok for me to fap to this or not. According to legend, Pythagoras' followers threw the man who discovered irrational numbers off the boat, as it really made no sense in their day and age. Similarily, i want to throw myself off a boat, for taking so much time out of my free time to write this, when really it doesn't matter in the slightest. I did ironically enjoy it though, no not the boat thing, i cant swim. I meant the show, irony is the spice of life they say, now you may be wondering who out there actually says this, well i do, silly face, and therefore everyone else will as well, because my word is law. Ironically i dont actually believe any of what i just wrote and neither should you. Watch the show for all i care, but if a member of the student counsil tries to dress YOU in girly clothes against your will, you say no, and get the heck out of there, cause that is No Good.

i was expecting generic self-insert garbage ala mahouka, asterisk wars, chivalry of a failed knight etc. And at first it really seems like that's what you're in for, cause this show REEKS of red flags

the magic school is not a concept that's very original, the uniforms are of course as unrealistic as you would expect of a show of this caliber, the characters have all the standard personality tropes (smart main girl, nice and cute blonde girl, stone-faced blue haired girl, there's even a dude who keep the tipping his glasses like a bastard) the MC is a guy who at first seems really weak ... but has a trump card that makes him one of the strongest in the series. If you feel disgusted or i've scared you off from watching the show then please for the love of god bear with me

the thing is that despite the fact that it's really generic, it's generic done well. The MC's personality is snarky and entertaining and steals the show every time he's on-screen. Despite his trump card he rarely actually gets shit done and is more of a fuck-up than anything. At first glance it might seem like the show is going one direction but then throws a huge fuck you and does something you didn't expect to happen. The show is self aware to the point where it almost parodies shows similar to itself. Yes there's action in the show, but there's also comedy and usually a punchline somewhere in said action to let the viewer know that the show doesn't take itself too seriously. It's sad that most people will merely write this off as some generic garbage after one episode and call it a day.

I'm not a fan of numbered ratings, since it's so vague what you really mean by said number, people who really enjoy a show might just drop a 10 and not think things through enough and that's that. so before you write my 7 off as some fence-sitting middle-of-the-road review know this. This is a genuine 7/10 that i would absolutely recommend people to give a few episodes before they decided if it's their cup of tea or not.
