At the time of writing this review, ''Three Days of Happiness'' is placed 23rd in the overal rankings of MAL Manga section. I've written 0 reviews on MAL before but seeing that, I simply had to write one because to put it simple:
That is a crime against fiction.
FULL SPOILERS AHEAD
Was originally recommended this story due to the similarity to ''I Had That Same Dream Again'' but once I got it in my hands and read through it I realised it couldn't be further away in comparison, so don't fall for the same trap. This story is in short a Teenage Romantic Drama without any
...
of the spice of actual good romantic dramas. Instead of that, you get this guy who would never exist even in this fictional world. That also has very bad characteristics like thinking of sexually abusing the girl next to him. Woah, lets back up a little, what is this story about? In short:
THE STORY
Its about a guy selling his lifespan for an extremely small amount of money just because of how worthless it is. After selling it, due to how humans react when having set amount of life span left there is a monitor girl in place always close to him to make sure he doesnt do anything stupid (Who happens to be EXACTLY his type). This is who he fantasizes (and implies it to her) about sexually abusing at one point, but after not doing it the girl eventually opens up to him (????). They then lists her wishes and how her life was so terrible since it was basically sold away due to her mothers debt for this job. The main character then becomes the biggest simp ever and spends last of his days trying to do the things she wants to do once in her lifetime. Its around here its revealed that the MCs life was actually not worth 300k yen, but just 30 yen. The monitor girl had basically given her money to him at the start for absolutely no reason whatsoever (?????). but then later down the guy figures out that he could sell his remaining life span (he didnt sell all it away immediately at first) to pay off her debt of 40 years. But since his life span is worth so extremely little this would have no real effect. but SUDDENLY he becomes the next picazzo in artistic talent when he draws the girl and he makes such good drawings that would go down in history long after his death so therefore his life time was now worth about 38 years of her debt. Oh and this is all going on when he is walking around the town with the girl (who no one else can see) and in the eyes of the other people is a crazy pretender of having a girlfriend. He sells the remaining time so he has only 3 days left to simp pay for this girls dept and the girl pays all her life away for 2 years so they live their last 3 days together, both visible for people. Happy Ending.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
I will not say the author is a bad writer, they did manage to keep it intriguing to read through to find out what will happen next and thats a good quality of this novel. But please never ever let them close to a storyboard again, for they put in the most random last moment solutions to try to reach this happy ending. In addition they write his characters as pretty terrible people. Which, terrible people is fine but you are supposed to root or relate for them in this case so it does not work out. The story just comes of as a complete power fantasy for the author, as if this is a teenager who would self insert himself into a fanfiction they wrote. That's the only way I can see these characters make sense.
FINAL WORDS
Really, this is the least down to earth self pity party of a story I have read in recent memory. There is some value in this book but quite frankly the question the book offers - would you sell your life and for how much - is an infinite times much more compelling thing than the actual content of the story. I hope sincerely for a day where this novel is rightfully not in the top Manga section of MyAnimeList.
